What is the fastest VPN to use in India?

If you are a gamer or an avid streamer, then having fast speeds is going to be at the top of your list of concerns when picking a VPN. To help you understand what level of speeds you can expect when using a VPN, we run three speed tests a day on all of our recommendations. We then display an average of the results in the table below.

Place Provider Average Speed Max Speed Visit Site
1. 67.91 Mbit/s 118.33 Mbit/s Visit Site
2. 65.47 Mbit/s 110.47 Mbit/s Visit Site
3. 60.87 Mbit/s 118.77 Mbit/s Visit Site
4. 59.51 Mbit/s 109.88 Mbit/s Visit Site
5. 50.35 Mbit/s 123.66 Mbit/s Visit Site
6. 46.9 Mbit/s 81.91 Mbit/s Visit Site
7. 28.95 Mbit/s 36.3 Mbit/s Visit Site

Will a VPN improve my speeds?

No, this is a common misconception. Generally, VPNs will have a minor impact on the speeds that you currently get. The ones we recommend in our list, however, all have fast enough speeds to minimise this impact to the point that you won't notice it.

Why do I need a VPN in India?

In India, technology and surveillance go hand in hand. India has one of the most invasive biometric databases in the world: the Aadhaar card system. Around 90% of Indian citizens are enrolled in Aadhaar, which forces people to give up their biometric data. The data citizens must hand over to the government includes photographs, fingerprints, and Iris scans. Furthermore, it is common for ISPs and the government to snoop on citizens online.

Also, in India, many websites are blocked for religious or political reasons, and local network administrators such as schools, workplaces, landlords, and public WiFi hotspots can snoop on internet users.

How does a VPN help?

A VPN encrypts all your internet traffic. This stops your ISP and other bodies from tracking your web browsing habits. It also stops the ISP from retaining your web history and metadata on behalf of the government.

How a VPN works

A VPN for India also conceals your IP address from the websites you visit. This stops those websites from tracking your IP address. In addition, by geo-spoofing your IP address you can pretend to be in a different country - which lets you bypass local censorship or access foreign content like PornHub, BBC iPlayer or Netflix US.

What can I use a VPN for in India?

VPNs are a versatile tool that allow you to gain online freedom, secure your data, and unblock thousands of websites. Here is a list of the most useful things an India VPN does:

What makes a VPN good to use in India?

When compiling our list of the best VPNs to use in India, we looked at the following:

Can I get a free VPN for India?

Yes, but be careful!

Although free VPNs exist, the vast majority are dangerous services that must be avoided. Most free VPNs make money by collecting and selling their user's data. This is the exact opposite of what a VPN was designed to do. A VPN is for privacy, and if it is engaging in data collection, it is a terrible service.

A lot of free VPNs use data to serve ads, or will sell your data to marketing firms to create a revenue stream. Some free VPNs have even been found lying about encryption, or filled with nasty spyware.

The good news is that there are some trustworthy free VPN services on the market. These VPNs provide a limited VPN service for free to allow consumers to gain privacy and freedom during emergencies, and to let consumers try out their VPN service.

We recommend HotSpot Shield (free) for India

If you are set on using a free VPN, we recommend trying HotSpot Shield free . It features on our best free VPN list and offers servers both inside and outside of India. Unfortunately, the data cap on the free plan is a bit low at only 500MB per day. So, if you are looking to stream or game online with your VPN, you going to have to consider a premium option.

Remember, a reliable free VPN that provides privacy is going to be pretty limited, because the provider ultimately wants you to pay for the full service. However, it is an excellent way to get a taste of a VPN. To get access to a non-restricted VPN with all the features -we recommend you take advantage of a VPNs free trial or money back guarantee.

Top-tip: Get ExpressVPN for Free!

Did you know you can experience ExpressVPN's fully featured service without restrictions… for free!

If you're finding free VPNs too restrictive, why not test ExpressVPN premium service? Simply purchase a subscription using the button below and take advantage of the absolutely risk-free money-back-guarantee. Enjoy the service for up to 30-days, and when you cancel, you will receive a complete refund!

Proxy services or VPNs?

It is possible to use Proxy websites and browser extensions to bypass website restrictions and censorship in India. Unfortunately, many popular services now implement proxy blocks - meaning that few proxies actually work.

Another great option for unblocking content is by using Smart DNS. Many popular VPN services such as ExpressVPN , now throw in a smart DNS service for free, which means that you get both a VPN and Smart DNS as part of your subscription.

No matter whether you use Smart DNS or a proxy extension, it is worth noting that neither of them is as secure as a VPN. This is because a VPN provides strong encryption inside a VPN tunnel, to stop your ISP tracking your browsing habits. To unblock and get data privacy at the same time: A VPN is always the best option.

The answer to this question is no, having and using a VPN is perfectly legal as many businesses inside and out of India use one. It does depend on how you use it, however, as accessing restricted content could get you in trouble.

The Government has taken to blocking certain popular websites, and at one point even the Google Play Store in an attempt to make it harder for people to gain access to VPNs and circumnavigate state imposed content blocks.

The good news is that VPNs in this guide all provide watertight privacy, so that you can do what you want without fear of being monitored.

VPNs to avoid

If you are fearful of accidentally subscribing to a dodgy VPN, we recommend sticking to one of the best VPNs for India in this article (we have been extremely careful only to include the best of the best!). If you need a free VPN, you can follow the link to see our recommended secure free services (the article also contains a lot of information on VPNs that you need to avoid). If you are in need of a completely unrestricted VPN with no limitations, and unlimited downloads - but you are also short on cash - we recommend that you check out the world's best cheap VPNs. These lists will allow you to pick a secure and trustworthy VPN.

However, to help you out we have listed some VPNs below that are known to be dodgy and that you should avoid at all costs:

  • Hola. This VPN is known to collect data from users to serve personalized adverts. It also sells user data to third parties. The software suffers from concerning leaks that destroy your privacy. And the VPN has been found to be fraudulently stealing and reselling its users bandwidth.
  • TurboVPN. This provider is not as bad as Hola. However, it has a highly questionable privacy policy which means this VPN can’t be trusted to properly protect your data.
  • VPNMaster. This VPN has been found to contain spyware and tracking libraries. A VPN is supposed to be for privacy, not corporate espionage!
  • TouchVPN. This is a highly dubious service that provides even worse security than many free VPNs on the market. The VPN stores logs and IP addresses, meaning that the VPN is providing no privacy and is snooping on its users.
  • IndiaVPN. This Android app VPN is known to be insecure and provide poor privacy levels due to a bad privacy policy that allows user data to be retained and resold.

Hi Mouhurtik, I'm afraid this is a common misconception about VPNs. VPNs will hide what you get up to the internet, are great for bypassing censorship, will allow you to watch overseas TV services, and will protect you when using public WiFi. What they cannot do is bypass your ISP's data allowance plans.
