Why do I need a VPN in India?

In India, technology and surveillance go hand in hand. India has one of the most invasive biometric databases in the world: the Aadhaar card system. Around 90% of Indian citizens are enrolled in Aadhaar, which forces people to give up their biometric data. The data citizens must hand over to the government includes photographs, fingerprints, and Iris scans.  Furthermore, in India it is common for ISPs and the government to snoop on citizens online.

Also, in India, many websites are blocked for religious or political reasons. And, local network administrators such as schools, workplaces, landlords, and public WiFi hotspots can snoop on internet users.

A VPN encrypts all your internet traffic. This stops your ISP and other bodies from tracking your web browsing habits. It also stops the ISP from retaining your web history and metadata on behalf of the government.

A VPN for India also conceals your IP address from the websites you visit. This stops those websites from tracking your IP address. In addition, by geo-spoofing your IP address you can pretend to be in a different country - which lets you bypass local censorship or access foreign content like BBC iPlayer or Netflix US.

What can a VPN for India do?

VPNs are a versatile tool that allow you to gain online freedom, secure your data, and unblock thousands of websites. Here is a list of the most useful things an India VPN does:

What makes a great VPN for India?

VPNs are a versatile online tool that can be used to gain digital privacy and freedom online. With a VPN, you can pretend to be in a different country to access the internet as if you were there. This allows you to bypass local censorship imposed by the Indian government. A VPN also encrypts your data so that it cannot be tracked or intercepted by hackers, local network administrators, employers, landlords, schools, ISPs, or the government. VPNs also conceal your real IP address from the websites you visit; combatting corporate surveillance.

A good VPN for India is just a service that has all the features you need to gain privacy, security, and freedom in India. A great VPN for India will have servers located all over the world, so that you can unblock anything you want. However, it will also provide IP addresses in India so that you can access local services while still making use of the VPN’s encryption.

There are hundreds of commercial VPNs on the market, which can make choosing one difficult. Our beginner’s guide can guide you through everything you need to know. However, the most important thing to understand is that not every VPN is created equally. Some VPNs have few server locations, slow servers that are no good for streaming, gaming, or videoconferencing, outdated encryption (or no encryption at all), and dangerous privacy policies that let the VPN sell your data to third parties.

The VPNs that we have recommended have all been selected because they have fully featured apps that have everything you need:

  1. VPN server locations

A VPN for India must have servers in and around India. It must also have servers located all over the world; so that you can pretend to be anywhere and unblock vast amounts of content.

The bigger the choice of locations a VPN provider has, the more places you can pretend to be in. This allows you to unblock more restricted content from around the world. For more information, please check out our guide for changing your location with a VPN

  2. Connection speeds

Most VPNs are slow because they have inferior server networks. Those VPNs are a waste of money. To enjoy using a VPN to unblock more content, you need a VPN that can stream in HD without buffering - and do other data-intensive tasks like gaming or downloading via BitTorrent.

Our recommendations are all super-fast. However, if you are interested in the fastest VPNs please click the link. For extra information on torrenting with a VPN please read our best VPN for torrenting guide.

  3. Privacy and encryption

Many people use a VPN to access services like US Netflix. However, a VPN's  primary purpose is to provide digital privacy. Accessing content that is restricted by the Indian government could get you in trouble, which is why it is important to get a VPN that also provides watertight privacy and security.

Our recommended VPNs have excellent privacy policies, and up-to-date encryption algorithms. They also provide vital VPN features such as a kill switch - to ensure you never leak any data to your ISP when downloading privately.

  4. What devices does the VPN support?

Not all VPNs have apps for all platforms. For this reason, it is essential that you choose a VPN that has apps for the devices you own.  All the recommended VPNs for India in this guide have Windows VPN and Mac VPN clients as well as mobile support for Android VPN and iOS VPN. Custom Linux VPN clients are harder to find. Only CyberGhost and ExpressVPN offer Linux versions of their app, although they don't have Linux GUI VPN clients.

All the VPN services above provide multiple simultaneous connections, meaning that you can use the VPN on all of your devices with just a single subscription.

Can I get a free VPN for India?

Although free VPNs do exist, the vast majority are dangerous services that must be avoided. Most free VPNs make money by collecting and selling their user's data. This is the exact opposite of what a VPN was designed to do. A VPN is for privacy, and if it is engaging in data collection, it is a terrible service. A lot of free VPNs use data to serve ads, or will sell your data to marketing firms to create a revenue stream. Some free VPNs have even been found lying about encryption, or filled with nasty spyware.

The good news is that there are some  trustworthy free VPN serviceson the market. These VPNs provide a limited VPN service for free to allow consumers to gain privacy and freedom during emergencies, and to let consumers try out their VPN service. Remember, a reliable free VPN that provides privacy is going to be pretty limited, because the provider ultimately wants you to pay for the full service. However, it is an excellent way to get a taste of a VPN.

Free VPN plans with trustworthy providers offer limited features to encourage people to pay for a full premium account. To get access to a non-restricted VPN with all the features -we recommend you take advantage of a VPNs free trial or money back guarantee.

Proxy services or VPNs?

It is possible to use Proxy websites and browser extensions to bypass website restrictions and censorship in India. Unfortunately, many popular services now implement proxy blocks - meaning that few proxies actually work.

Another great option for unblocking content is by using Smart DNS. Many popular VPN services such as NordVPN , now throw in a smart DNS service for free, which means that you get both a VPN and Smart DNS as part of your subscription.

No matter whether you use Smart DNS or a proxy extension, it is worth noting that neither of them is as secure as a VPN. This is because a VPN provides strong encryption inside a VPN tunnel, to stop your ISP tracking your browsing habits. To unblock and get data privacy at the same time: A VPN is always the best option.

VPNs to avoid

If you are fearful of accidentally subscribing to a dodgy VPN, we recommend sticking to one of the best VPNs for India in this article (we have been extremely careful only to include the best of the best!). If you need a free VPN, you can follow the link to see our recommended secure free services (the article also contains a lot of information on VPNs that you need to avoid). If you are in need of a completely unrestricted VPN with no limitations, and unlimited downloads - but you are also short on cash - we recommend that you check out the world's best cheap VPNs.  These lists will allow you to pick a secure and trustworthy VPN.

However, to help you out we have listed some of the VPNs below that are known to be dodgy and that you should avoid at all costs:

  • Hola. This VPN is known to collect data from users to serve personalized adverts. It also sells user data to third parties. The software suffers from concerning leaks that destroy your privacy. And the VPN has been found to be fraudulently stealing and reselling its users bandwidth.

  • TurboVPN. This provider is not as bad as Hola. However, it has a highly questionable privacy policy which means this VPN can’t be trusted to properly protect your data.

  • VPNMaster. This VPN has been found to contain spyware and tracking libraries. A VPN is supposed to be for privacy not corporate espionage!

  • TouchVPN. This is a highly dubious service that provides even worse security than many free VPNs on the market. The VPn stores logs and IP addresses, meaning that the VPN is providing no privacy and is snooping on its users.

  • IndiaVPN. This Android app VPN is known to be insecure and provide poor privacy levels due to a bad privacy policy that allows user data to be retained and resold.

Hi Mouhurtik, I'm afraid this is a common misconception about VPNs. VPNs will hide what you get up to the internet, are great for bypassing censorship, will allow you to watch overseas TV services, and will protect you when using public WiFi. What they cannot do is bypass your ISP's data allowance plans.

Hi, I am from India. I am planning to opt for a VPN service. My use-cases are overall security and accessing country-specific contents(basically contents not available in India). I checked the reviews for VPN unlimited and felt it is decent. Do you suggest to go for it? Will it be a worthy investment.

Hi Frank, Sorry, but I have removed a rival website's affiliate link. If you have read the reviews and VPN Unlimited seems to fit your needs, then go for it. The price you quoted seems very reasonable.
