ExpressVPN has made a name for itself by offering a high level of privacy and blisteringly fast speeds. The provider currently has three speedy servers based in India, located in Mumbai and Chennai.

I sometimes come across folks wondering if ExpressVPN is worth the money – it's a bit pricier than other providers, after all. But I think that it is, and that you more than get what you pay for! All of ExpressVPN's apps are easy to install and intuitive to use, even for beginners, and I liked knowing that my data was secure at home and on the go. ExpressVPN doesn't cut corners, and it's that premium service that you're paying for.

The provider makes its home in the British Virgin Islands, taking it far out of the reach of more restrictive jurisdictions like the US and UK. Express also implements strong OpenVPN encryption in addition to a zero-logs policy, to ensure its users' digital privacy is protected at all times. You'll be able to install Express on just about any platform, and the software is easy to use, looks great, and comes fully-featured with a kill-switch and DNS leak protection.

It has servers located in over 94 countries, and all those servers provide fantastic speeds for streaming in HD. ExpressVPN also provides access to many of the most popular streaming services like Netflix US, BBC iPlayer, Hulu, Amazon Prime Video, HBO, Disney+, and much more! You can try ExpressVPN completely risk-free thanks to its generous 30-day money-back guarantee.

NordVPN is based in Panama and it recently won Best Overall VPN at the VPN Awards in Las Vegas. It is a zero-logs VPN that is perfect for the privacy-conscious and has a large choice of VPN features. NordVPN’s apps come with a kill switch, DNS leak protection, VPN into Tor, double-hop encryption, and XOR obfuscated servers.

NordVPN has over 30 servers in India and no shortage of Indian IP addresses for you to use. I’ve found connecting to servers in India really easy - all you have to do is select the country on the map they provide and I had no issues with speed or unblocking content.

This service is also super secure thanks to how it implements encryption protocols; OpenVPN, IKeV2, and their very own protocol NordLynx which is based off WireGuard protocol. When testing this VPN found NordLynx connects really quickly and the servers that support this protocol are great for unblocking streaming services and geo-restricted sites. I also loved their ad and malware blocker called CyberSec. This was really effective at blocking ads and allowed me to browse the web ad-free!

NordVPN has 24/7 support and has servers in 60 countries, including 13 in India. Nord can also unblock iPlayer, Netflix US, hulu, and anything else you want. A superb VPN that will keep your data private and secure both at home and on public WiFi. You can also take advantage of the NordVPN 30-day money-back guarantee!

Private Internet Access (known as PIA) is a veteran of the VPN market. Some customers may be put off to learn that PIA is based in the US, but the service abides by a robust no-logs policy that has been proven in court on multiple occasions, which makes it highly trustworthy.

I tested the service thoroughly and was happy to see it came set up with OpenVPN UDP by default. What's more, you can easily change onto WireGuard if you prefer to get even better speeds. PIA's apps come with a ton of customization, which makes it great for torrenting for example. I was also happy to find that PIS provides DNS leak protection and a kill-switch, which means that you will always get privacy even if the VPN connection accidentally drops out.

I was also impressed to find that PIA now has 20,000 servers dotted across 74 countries. And it has plenty of servers in India, too. So, if you want an easy-to-use VPN that can unblock most sites and provide excellent value for money, PIA is a superb option. For those who are interested, I tested it with Netflix US and found it to work perfectly for streaming more shows. A superb all-rounder.

PrivateVPN is an excellent VPN for India. It has servers in Mumbai and Bangalore which provide users access to an Indian IP address.

Not only does it have a zero-logs policy and OpenVPN encryption, but it is also cheap. PrivateVPN has software for all platforms and those apps are secure and have a choice of encryption, including - OpenVPN UDP/TCP, L2TP/IPSEC, PPTP, and IKEv2. Mac users will have access to OpenVPN by default, which isn't something that all services offer.

This Swedish VPN has servers in over 63 countries and all those servers are fast enough for streaming in HD. I found that PrivateVPN was more than capable of unblocking Netflix US, in fact, it provides access to 15 Netflix libraries in total. It also unblocks BBC iPlayer, Amazon Prime, as well as Indian streaming services such as Hotstar. PrivateVPN's ability to unblock streaming services is fantastic considering the low cost of the service.

If you want a VPN with great customer care, this service has you covered! It has live chat support for 18 hours a day and email support 24/7. What's more, the service offers a fantastic 30-day money-back guarantee, so you can put it to the test and see how it compares to its more expensive competition.

Surfshark VPN has only been around for a few years, but in that short amount of time, it has taken the VPN market by storm with blazing fast speed performance and 1700 servers in over 63 countries. As is to be expected from today’s top VPN providers, Surfshark offers a 30-day money-back guarantee and excellent 24/7 live chat support. What is unusual is that it allows you to connect as many devices as you want to the service at the same time!

Throw in split tunneling so you can choose which apps routes through the VPN and which don’t, a full Smart DNS service, and the fact that Surfshark successfully unlocked every streaming service I threw at it, and you can see why it won ProPrivacys coveted Newcomer Award.

Whenever I fire up Surshark, I'm always thoroughly impressed by the overall quality of this service. I found that it’s tough to beat its speeds, security, and server selection. We run speed tests once a week and this service often at the top of the speed testing table. On top of that, the desktop apps and mobile apps are slick and incredibly easy to use, even for novices. I love that it has an in-built ad and malware blocker, which in my experience works really well and gives a slick and fast browsing experience. It’s almost hard to believe that such an amazing VPN service with so many awesome features and privacy protections is being offered at such a bargain price point.

Surfshark is registered in the British Virgin Islands and easily meets my requirements for a no-logs VPN. Technical security is also top-notch, and I appreciate the wealth of extra privacy and security features on offer. These include double-hop VPN, and DNS-based ad blocking and malware protection.

VYPR Demo

VyprVPN is a provider based in Switzerland. I think it's self-evident that the more hellbent on surveilling its citizens a government is, the better privacy tools you need from a VPN. This VPN implements a strong zero-logs policy which has been verified by a third party. It supports strong OpenVPN encryption across of its apps as well which is great as this is the gold standard in encryption.

It also has useful privacy features such as a kill-switch and advanced obfuscation (stealth mode) which they call Chameleon. This ensures that your ISP and local network administrators are never able to track your web browsing habits. This feature in particular makes it a great option if you want to unblock services restricted in India such as TikTok or other blocked mobile apps. It’s also worth reiterating that this provider owns, manages, and fixes its entire network - they know exactly who’s got access and what they’re doing - and, in my opinion, that’s a safer way of doing things.

For those who require an IP address in India, VyprVPN has a nice choice of servers. VyprVPN has plenty of India VPN servers making it a great option for anyone looking to access Indian streaming services like hotstar,

With servers in more than 70 countries, you'll be able to unblock virtually any content, site, or streaming service out there! This includes the sought-after Netflix US and BBC iPlayer sites. Additionally, VyprVPN runs on a fast Tier-1 network of proprietary servers that are all owned by its parent company, Golden Frog. This means that VyprVPN can provide lightning-fast connections that make streaming, P2P activity, and conference calls a breeze – no buffering or sluggish loading times in sight. All in all, this provider is a great all-rounder, and well worth testing using its 30-day money-back guarantee.

What is the fastest VPN to use in India?

Whether you're a gamer, torrenter, or an avid streamer, fast VPN servers are going to be one of your primary concerns when choosing a VPN. To provide a glimpse of the speeds you can expect from our recommended providers, we run speed tests on them three times a day – and you'll find an average of the results in the table below.

Place Provider Average Speed Max Speed Visit Site
1. 64.53 Mbit/s 78.50 Mbit/s Visit Site
2. 59.00 Mbit/s 82.48 Mbit/s Visit Site
3. 47.93 Mbit/s 55.10 Mbit/s Visit Site
4. 47.41 Mbit/s 63.47 Mbit/s Visit Site
5. 42.93 Mbit/s 72.19 Mbit/s Visit Site
6. 41.86 Mbit/s 96.70 Mbit/s Visit Site
7. 39.68 Mbit/s 68.91 Mbit/s Visit Site

Check out our speed testing tool for more information about how we test VPN speeds.

Will a VPN improve my speeds?

Sadly not! This is a rather common misconception, though. Because a VPN must encrypt and decrypt your traffic, you should expect to experience a slight loss of speed when connected to a VPN server. This loss should only ever have a minor impact on the speeds provided by your ISP, however. What's more, the VPNs we've hand-picked in this guide are all fast enough to minimize this impact to the point that you'll hardly notice any speed loss at all!

Why do I need a VPN in India?

In India, technology and mass surveillance go hand in hand. India has one of the most invasive biometric databases in the world: the Aadhaar card system. Altogether, about 90% of Indian citizens are enrolled in Aadhaar, which forces people to submit their biometric data. The biometric data citizens must hand over to the government includes photographs, fingerprints, and iris scans. On top of that, it is common for Indian ISPs and the government to snoop on citizens online.

What's more, many websites in India are blocked for religious or political reasons, and local network administrators such as schools, workplaces, landlords, and public Wi-Fi hotspots can easily snoop on internet users.

How does a VPN help?

A VPN encrypts your internet traffic, stopping your ISP and other entities from tracking your web browsing habits. It also stops your ISP from retaining your web history and metadata on behalf of the government.

How a VPN works

By using a VPN for India, your true IP address will be concealed from the sites you visit, meaning they won't be able to track you. In addition, by geo-spoofing your IP address you can pretend to be in a different country – which will allow you to bypass local censorship or access restricted foreign content like PornHub, BBC iPlayer, or Netflix US.

What can I use a VPN for in India for?

A VPN is a versatile tool that allows you to achieve full online freedom, secure your data, and unblock thousands of geo-restricted websites from all over the world. Here is a list of some of the most useful things an India VPN can do for you:

Can I unblock mobile apps in India with a VPN?

The Indian government recently made a drastic move to block popular apps like WeChat, TikTok, and UC Browser. More than 200 apps, developed in China, were blocked by the government in total, rendering them inaccessible to users wishing to download them from India.

When you connect to a VPN server located outside of India, however, you'll be able to unlock full access to all the apps the government has banned. Simply use your India VPN to connect to a server located in a country where the apps are not banned and you're all set!

What features to look for in an Indian VPN service?

Regardless of whether you'll be using your VPN to check out what's new on Netflix, shore up your security when on the go, or access the net without censorship, you'll first need to decide on a provider. But choosing a provider is easier said than done now that there are hundreds of services on the market. We've put together a list of the more important factors to keep in mind when making your decision:

VPN servers in India

The sheer population density of India makes it a key location for VPN servers, and the better providers out there will boast servers in multiple cities across the country, too. Unfortunately, the same cannot be said for smaller and less capable VPNs. So, if you want to connect to a server in India, you're better off sticking with our list of recommended VPNs – or making sure that any VPN you're researching yourself has servers in the country.

VPN server locations in India

Server location is particularly important in India, where some regional content can only be accessed by connecting to VPN servers in a specific region of the country. All of our recommended VPNs have servers in India, as well as in dozens of additional locations overseas.

Picking a server

In order to unblock content exclusive to a particular region, your server selection could become limited to those based in that same location, but if you're simply looking to connect to any server in India, we recommend connecting to one that isn't overloaded with users and is close as possible to your original geographic location.

For example, if you are connecting from Europe, you will want to pick a server in Mumbai or New Delhi, rather than Kolkata on the other side of the country. Fortunately, many VPN clients can make server recommendations for you based on speed, location, and server load.

If you would like to learn more about using your VPN to connect to India from abroad, check out our How to get an Indian IP address guide.

Can I get a free VPN for India?

Yes, but be careful!

Free VPNs do exist, but the vast majority of them are dangerous services that you'd be much better off avoiding completely. Free services will typically make money by collecting and selling their users' data. Obviously, this is the exact opposite of what a VPN is supposed to do. A VPN should enhance your privacy, not actively compromise it. If a service is collecting user data and selling it off to the highest bidder, then it's a terrible service!

A lot of free services use data to serve ads or will sell user data to marketing firms to create a revenue stream. On top of this, some free services have been caught red-handed lying about the encryption they provide, and some are even flat-out scams that are filled with nasty spyware.

The good news is that there are some trustworthy, free VPN services available. These VPN providers offer a limited and free service that allows customers to shore up their privacy and freedom during emergencies, or put security features to the test.

The best free VPN for India: HotSpot Shield (free)

If you are set on using a free VPN, we recommend trying HotSpot Shield free . It features on our best free VPN list and offers free local servers to connect to India and a large network outside of India. Unfortunately, the data cap on the free plan is a bit low at only 500MB per day. So, if you are looking to stream or game online with your VPN, you're going to have to consider a premium option.

Remember, any reliable free service is going to be pretty limited, even if its privacy measures are robust. The provider wants you to pay for the full subscription, ultimately. These free services are a great way of checking out what a VPN can do, however. To get access to a VPN with all the features and none of the restrictions, we'd advise that you take advantage of a VPN's free trial or money-back guarantee.

VPNs for online gaming in India

In 2021, there was a reported 365 million online gamers recorded in India. Whether you are playing PUBG on your phone, Fortnite on a console, or CSGO on a PC, a VPN can help you broaden your online horizons, play against the best of the best from other countries, or even snag a bargain on Steam or other online gaming storefronts.

Optimize your VPN's online gaming performance

We all know that when gaming online, speed is everything. So, you will need a top-of-the-line VPN that can provide the speeds needed to keep up with the competition. Fortunately, all our VPN recommendations are more than capable of supporting online gameplay if you set them up correctly.

To get the best performance out of your VPN, we recommend following the advice outlined above in the VPN servers in India section. But, to boil it down to its key points, you should:

For more information about using a VPN for this purpose, check out our VPN for gaming guide.

Bargain hunting with your VPN

It's true! Using a VPN, you can connect to Steam and other online store from around the world and purchase games for lower prices. The price you pay for a title will often vary from country to country, so you'll need to shop around for a bargain, but we've also heard reports that many gamers use their VPN to connect to Argentina for lower-priced games.

VPNs for safe torrenting in India

Torrenting is an incredibly popular way to get your hands on the latest media releases – whether they're films, TV shows, music from your favorite band, or even games. It won't cost you a penny, so keep in mind that it's not exactly legal. As a result, in India, more people than ever are turning to VPNs to help protect their identity when torrenting.

Each time you connect to your favorite torrenting site, like ThePirateBay, MovieRulz, or Tamilrockers, you run the risk of your IP address being leaked to other users and copyright holders around the world. This can lead to cease and desist letters, expensive fines, or even jail time.

A VPN can help protect against this by encrypting your connection and masking your IP. This means that your ISP cannot tell what you're doing, because all your traffic is encrypted until it reaches you. It also means when you connect to a P2P site, your fellow peers and copyright holders will only see the IP address of the VPN server you're connecting through, making it hard to trace what you are doing online back to you.

If you partake in torrenting, we strongly recommend you make the minor investment into a VPN to avoid any legal issues down the line. If you would like to know more about torrenting with a VPN and staying safe, check out the guide below:

Proxy services or VPNs?

It is possible to use Proxy websites and browser extensions to bypass website restrictions and censorship in India. Unfortunately, many popular services now implement proxy blocks – meaning that few proxies actually work.

Another great option for unblocking content is by using Smart DNS. Many popular VPN services such as ExpressVPN , now throw in a smart DNS service for free, which means that you get both a VPN and Smart DNS as part of your subscription.

No matter whether you use Smart DNS or a proxy extension, it is worth noting that neither of them are as secure as a VPN. This is because a VPN provides strong encryption inside a VPN tunnel, to stop your ISP from tracking your browsing habits. In order to unblock content and gain digital privacy, a VPN is always going to be the best option.

Simply put, no. Having a VPN and using it is perfectly legal. In fact, there are countless businesses that use them on a daily basis – both inside and outside of India. It's what you do while connected to a VPN server that can be illegal and get you into trouble. For example, downloading copyrighted content remains a crime whether you're using a VPN or not.

The Indian government has taken to blocking certain popular websites, and at one point even the Google Play Store, in an attempt to make it harder for people to gain access to VPNs and circumvent state-imposed content blocks.

The good news is that VPNs in this guide all provide watertight privacy features so that you can do what you want without fear of being monitored.

A change in regulations – 2021

In November 2021, the Indian Government relaxed its tech regulations and allowed businesses to run their own VPN services.

Previously, companies in India were not able to use VPNs that were not expressly provided by Telecos – or make international calls via a VPN. The COVID-19 pandemic forced the government to relent, however, and now the Indian Department of Telecom (DoT) has moved to relax these guidelines, making it much easier for people to work remotely from home. The DoT previously relaxed the guidelines in March and April 2021, but it was a temporary measure – the recent relaxation of regulations is permanent.

Dropping these regulations is expected to take the pressure off of India's IT enabled Services (ITeS) and Business Process Outsourcing (BPO). Members of Indian Industry associations relayed to the Government that the regulations were harmful to the IT sector, and felt outdated considering the actions being taken by other nations to facilitate safe working during the pandemic.

Will VPNs be blocked in India?

The Indian government has recently faced pressure from the Committee on Home Affairs to block VPN usage entirely. The Committee claims that VPNs allow cybercriminals to operate freely, beyond the reach of authorities, and that the services are readily available to anyone online.

The proposed ban would have dire ramifications for Indian VPN users, of course, who rely on the technology to enhance their privacy and bypass imposing geo-restrictions. In fact, VPN usage in India has soared since 2020, with over 348 million registered installations. This is partly due to the COVID-19 pandemic and the increase in remote work, as well as increasingly frequent internet shutdowns. Similarly, VPNs saw a surge in popularity shortly after PUBG and TikTok were banned in India.

Unfortunately, it would be possible for the Indian government to issue a VPN block – plenty of countries have already done so; like China, Russia, and North Korea. All it would take is a mandate from the government requiring ISPs to block VPN protocols used by the various services. At ProPrivacy, we believe everyone has a right to digital privacy (it's basically our motto), so we'll continue to monitor the situation and provide updates wherever possible.

VPNs to avoid

We've been careful to only include the best of the best when picking out our top VPNs for use in India. For this reason, we'd recommend sticking to them – especially if you're worried about inadvertently signing up with a dodgy provider.

Alternatively, if you're looking for a free VPN, follow the link to check out some secure options. The article also points out which free VPNs you should avoid at all costs – if you value your online privacy!

If you're in need of a completely unrestricted VPN with no limitations and unlimited downloads, but you're strapped for cash, we'd recommend that you take a gander at the world's best cheap VPNs. These lists will be a huge help to anyone deciding on a secure and trustworthy service.

However, to help rule out some of the more malicious options, we've listed the VPNs that are known to be dodgy. Don't give the following providers a second glance!

  • Hola. This VPN is known to collect data from users to serve personalized adverts. It also sells user data to third parties. The software suffers from concerning leaks that destroy your privacy. And the VPN has been found to be fraudulently stealing and reselling its users' bandwidth.
  • TurboVPN. This provider is not as bad as Hola. It does, however, have a highly questionable privacy policy, which means this VPN can't be trusted to protect your data properly.
  • VPNMaster. This VPN is known to contain spyware and tracking libraries. This is the exact opposite of what you want – a VPN is supposed to be a tool for privacy, not corporate espionage.
  • TouchVPN. This is a highly dubious service that provides even worse security than many free VPNs on the market. The VPN stores logs and IP addresses, meaning that the VPN is providing no privacy and is snooping on its users.
  • IndiaVPN. This Android app VPN is known to be insecure and provides poor privacy levels due to a bad privacy policy that allows user data to be retained and resold.

Hi Mouhurtik, I'm afraid this is a common misconception about VPNs. VPNs will hide what you get up to the internet, are great for bypassing censorship, will allow you to watch overseas TV services, and will protect you when using public WiFi. What they cannot do is bypass your ISP's data allowance plans.

Hi, I am from India. I am planning to opt for a VPN service. My use-cases are overall security and accessing country-specific contents(basically contents not available in India). I checked the reviews for VPN unlimited and felt it is decent. Do you suggest to go for it? Will it be a worthy investment.

Hi Frank, Sorry, but I have removed a rival website's affiliate link. If you have read the reviews and VPN Unlimited seems to fit your needs, then go for it. The price you quoted seems very reasonable.
