Will a VPN help improve my speeds?

You'll find that a VPN will actually slow your internet speeds slightly. A VPN encrypts your traffic and must route it further – via a remote VPN server – on its way to its final destination. However, the best VPNs ensure that this loss is practically imperceptible and minimize any adverse impact. As a result, you still get almost identical connection speeds to the ones you pay your ISP for.

The good news is that there is one specific set of circumstances in which a VPN can speed up your internet. In some places around the world, ISPs engage in traffic shaping (bandwidth throttling) to minimize congestion on their network. Customers who torrent, play games, stream 4k content, or engage in other data-intensive tasks may find themselves having their bandwidth throttled. This can result in pretty serious connection speed drops if your ISP actively throttles such traffic.

By connecting to a VPN, you prevent your ISP from knowing what you are doing online, which prevents them from shaping your traffic. As a result, you can enjoy the unadulterated connection speeds you pay for and rightly deserve. If you believe you are being slowed down by your internet provider, it is definitely worth trying a VPN to see if it solves the issue.

Why do I need a VPN for Xbox One?

A Virtual Private Network (VPN) is a versatile online service that is primarily designed to give people online privacy. A VPN does this by encrypting your traffic so that your ISP and local network administrators can no longer track what you do online. As a result, the VPN also prevent government surveillance.

You'll also benefit from the handy side effects of how a VPN works - when you're connected to one, it conceals your IP address from the websites and services you use. This allows you to pretend to be in a different country. So, in just a few clicks, you can use your Xbox VPN to access regional Xbox games and save money.

With the Xbox One doubling down as both a gaming console and home media center, more and more people are using the console to stream Netflix, Hulu, and more. In this case, a VPN can unblock shows and films that might not be available in your region.

How to Set up a VPN for Xbox One - Step by step guide

You have two options when it comes to setting up an Xbox VPN. The first is to connect your Xbox directly to a router that is running a VPN connection. You can also connect your Xbox to the internet, via a laptop or desktop computer that's connected to the VPN. We go through each method below.

Set up a VPN for Xbox on your Router (recommended)

Total time required: ~20 minutes (you will need admin access to your home router)

  2. Access your router’s control panel (check the router’s documentation to find it).

  3. Navigate to the Network/Setup/Settings/WAN tab in your router's control panel.

Set up a VPN without PC

  6. Boot up your Xbox One.

  7. Turn on your Xbox One and go to the Settings menu.

  11. Select your WiFi network from the list and connect with the relevant login details.

  12. Test your connection to confirm everything works and you're all set!

  13. The router should now cause your Xbox to appear to be in the remote location of your choosing.

How to unblock content on Xbox

Regional restrictions (geo-restrictions) stop you from accessing certain games (and apps) from certain regions or countries around the world. For example, Battlefield and the Grand Theft Auto series are blocked in a number of Middle Eastern countries. Netflix also restricts access to its full library of content outside the US. Find out more about how you can use a VPN that works with Netflix.

The good news is that anybody can actually bypass these geo-restrictions. With a VPN you can access games blocked where you live, or access international services such as Netflix US on your Xbox to watch more content. It is even possible to change which time zone you are in to find more opponents or to buy and play games before they are officially released in your region.

Get more information on changing your location with a VPN in our geo-spoofing with a VPN guide.

Protect your Xbox One from hackers

As we all know, the internet is, unfortunately, full of malevolent hackers. And recent years have seen them targeting games such as Sea of Thieves, Rocket League, and Call of Duty to engage in attacks and win games.

If attacked, tournament players can find themselves suddenly kicked from a game due to a Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) attack. This leaves them unable to play; rendering any chance of winning in tatters.

Using a VPN, your real IP address is safely concealed so that hackers can no longer target you.

Still unsure?

If you still need more information, check out our why do I need a VPN for gaming guide. In this article, we list the pros and cons of using a VPN service for gaming.

What else can I do with an Xbox VPN?

What you do with your VPN is entirely up to you. However, when you purchase a subscription, you'll be able to use your VPN on your PC, mobile phones, and tablet devices as well as your Xbox. All of your devices will be protected, and you'll have a secure online connection regardless of which one you're using. The VPNs we've recommended all allow you to install and use the service on between five and ten devices – and sometimes even an unlimited number of devices! So be sure to check out how many simultaneous connections your provider offers.

A VPN will also protect you when you connect to public WiFi, by stopping hackers from intercepting our traffic. For this reason, it is always a good idea to connect to your VPN when you're on the move. And with a VPN, you can access websites and services from back home when you go on vacation. A VPN will also help you to unblock websites all over the world so that you can watch foreign sports competitions, or use online services for cheaper rates. VPNs can even be used to purchase hotels and air flight tickets for less!

Finally, the encryption offered by a VPN provides privacy by stopping the government and ISPs from snooping on your web habits. So unless you want every website you visit being recorded and stored by your ISP, be sure to use a VPN to encrypt all your data.
