How to use a VPN on an LG Smart TV & What VPN to Use

Virtual Private Networks (VPNs) are amazing tools. Using a VPN for your LG smart TV will enable you to unblock TV shows and movies that aren't currently available in your location. VPNs are also fantastic security tools that encrypt all of the data going to and from your devices and as most services allow you to connect multiple devices with one account, you can protect all your gadgets. In this guide, we show you how to set up a VPN on your LG smart TV and list the best services to use.

What VPN Should you Get for your LG TV?

The most important considerations when selecting a VPN for your LG TV are server locations, connection speeds, encryption, and privacy policy. Most importantly, a VPN must unblock the content that you want to watch. Most VPN services struggle to unblock the likes of Netflix, BBC iPlayer, Amazon Prime, and more. How to Use a VPN on an LG Smart TV

There are a couple of ways to use a VPN service on your Smart TV, this depends on what operating system your TV runs. Below we run you through the steps so you can get your VPN working on your LG Smart TV.

How to Set up a VPN on a LG Smart TV running Android

If you have access to the google play store on your LG TV, then installing a VPN is simple. All you have to do is follow the steps below:

  1. Decide on your favorite VPN for LG. For LG phones we recommend ExpressVPN because it has the highest levels of security and servers in 94 countries. Furthermore, it has the highest speeds for streaming.
  2. Click through to the website, subscribe, and download the VPN software for your device. For an LG phone, you will need to get the Android version.
  3. Install the software and select OpenVPN encryption from the menu.
  4. Connect to a server in the country from which you want to access content.
  5. Navigate to the website of your choice, fully protected by your VPN's encryption.

How to Share Your Internet Connection with Your LG Smart TV - VPN Router

If your LG smart TV doesn't run Android, then unfortunately it isn't possible it install a VPN directly onto it. However, in those instances, you can still connect a VPN to your TV by using a VPN enabled router.

To do this you may need a new router as most will not allow you load a VPN onto them. If you only have A router given to you by your internet service provider the it won't be adequate. VPN routers can be pricey. If you are technically minded, then you can save yourself a little bit of money and load a VPN service onto your device yourself. There's two different forms of firmware that allow you to do this, DD-WRT or Tomato. However, if you do this wrong you can brick your brand new VPN ready router. We recommend that you avoid the hassle and purchase a pre-loaded VPN router from FlashRouters .

Follow the steps below to set up a VPN router with your LG Smart TV.

  1. Get your VPN pre-installed on a router. When a VPN is installed on a specially flashed (DD-WRT or Tomato) router, all the devices attached to that router are automatically protected by the VPN. This is much more convenient and means that all the devices in your home - including your LG smart TV - appear to be overseas. If this option is of interest to you, we recommend ExpressVPN , as the firm sells a pre-flashed router with the VPN already installed. For more options, check our article here.
  2. If a pre-flashed router is out of your price range, you can simply attach your smart TV to your PC or laptop and share its VPN connection. Doing so is simple - all you need is a speedy and reliable VPN provider, your PC connected to the internet via WiFi or Ethernet (adapter needed for Mac) and your smart TV attached to your computer with an Ethernet cable.

Share a VPN Connection with your LG smart TV using a Windows Computer

  1. Make sure your PC or laptop is connected to your VPN service.
  2.  Connect your smart TV to your laptop or PC with an Ethernet cable.
  3.  Open Network and Sharing Centre on your PC (Start > Control Panel > Network and Sharing Center) and click on ‘Change adapter settings.’
  4.  Locate your VPN connection. OpenVPN connections aren’t always labeled well, so look for one called 'TAP-Win32 Adaptor V9' (or similar). Right-click on it and choose ‘Properties’ on the drop-down menu.
  5. Click on the ‘Sharing’ tab and select the ‘Allow other network users to connect through this computer’s internet connection’ box. Next, select ‘Local Area Connection’ from the menu (if your computer has more than one Ethernet port, please select the one your smart TV is connected to) and click ‘OK.’
  6.  Finally, restart your smart TV and your computer.

For setting up a shared connection on a Mac, please take a look at our how to set up a VPN on a smart TV guide.

The advantages of using a VPN on an LG TV?

A world-class VPN for LG can be used on more than one device at once. Thus, subscribing to one of our recommended VPNs can be used not only to unblock websites on an LG phone or smart TV, but also on any other devices you might have (such as an Android tablet, phone, iOS device or even a laptop).

Once you have your chosen VPN, you will be able to enjoy the entire internet in privacy, allowing you to use restricted services from back home while on vacation. You can also enjoy other countries’ content from the comfort of your couch.

In addition, the security that an LG VPN provides will allow you to securely use public WiFi hotspots. With a VPN for LG, you will be free to enter passwords, login details, and important credentials anywhere, without fear that a hacker is snooping on your traffic.

Can I Get free VPN for my LG Smart TV?

Free VPNs are often very restrictive because they exist to entice users into purchasing a premium subscription. Worse yet, many are only free because they make money from their users by selling their data to third parties. This is exactly the opposite of what a VPN is supposed to do!

Seamless?! Oxymoronic and Self contradictory I'd say.

ExpressVPN is not supported by LG TVs as advised by them. It must be accessed via a compatible router (only 3) I have cancelled my account

Hi Rohan, Most smart TVs do not not natively support VPN apps (Android TVs excepted). We were not aware ExpressVPN claimed any different for LG TV's, which is why Ray discussed using a VPN router or sharing your PC's inter4net connection in this article. Note that ExpressVPN can, in fact, run on any VPN-capable router (including all DD-WRT routers).
