How we chose these Sport VPNs

There are hundreds of consumer-facing VPNs on the market, and they were not all created equally. Many VPNs have slow servers, poorly designed apps, and other issues that make them a bad choice for unblocking sports.

In this article, our experts carefully selected 5 VPNs that have the perfect features you need to unblock more sport online. All of our recommendations are superb; which means you are free to pick any one of them.

To help you out, we have explained the exact criteria our experts used to select the best VPNs for sports below.

Can I use a free VPN to unblock sports?

Most free VPN services are lousy services that have outdated encryption, critical data leaks, unreliable apps, and dodgy privacy policies that let them harvest and sell user data. This is the polar opposite of what a VPN is supposed to do.

The good news is that there are some free VPNs available on the market that are safe. Some premium VPNs provide a basic free plan to allow subscribers to test their service. Those free plans are super-restrictive. They have fewer server locations to choose from, they are usually extremely slow, and they can only be used a little bit each month.

The nice thing about a reliable free service is that you don't have to worry about it harvesting your data. Our recommendations will give you watertight privacy and security. However, they are unlikely to be any good when it comes to unblocking sports streams.

For this reason, we strongly recommend that you try a premium VPN service for free instead, by making use of their money-back guarantees.

What is the fastest VPN for sports channels?

All VPN services slow down your internet connection. However, with a fast VPN, you will hardly notice the difference in speed. We test VPN speeds regularly and have plotted the speeds of our best VPNs for sport below.

ExpressVPN NordVPN Private Internet Access
ProPrivacy.com SpeedTest (average) 100 85.9 62.2
Performance 10 9 8
Reliability 9 8 8
Speed 100 568.0 254.93

Check out our speed methodology page for details on how we test these services.

What type of sports streaming services can you unblock (and from where)?

The VPNs we have recommended have servers located all over the world. This means that you can pretend to be just about anywhere you can think of. As a result, you can access local TV stations and sports streaming services from right around the world. It doesn't actually matter where you currently live, because your VPN will easily allow you to conceal your real location to let you access those international services.

Below we have included a list of the best sports streaming websites and services from around the globe. You can unblock all of these services with a VPN.

For people that love American sports competitions like NFL, NBA, or MLB a Sports VPN can be combined with a subscription to an online TV service to get unrestricted access. A VPN for sports can also save people money. Despite having to pay for a VPN to unblock sports, for people that love the British Premier League subscribing to BeIN sports can work out much cheaper ($25 per month). Compare this to upwards of £33 ($41) and up to £60 ($75) a month to watch UK streams, and you can see why a VPN is a good idea!

Can I use a VPN to bypass blackout games in the US?

Yes. A VPN allows you to pretend to be in a different location. Most people use a VPN to pretend to be in a different country. However, you can also use a VPN to pretend to be in a different US state. As a result, you can easily stream blackout NFL or MLB games.

If an NFL or MLB game is blacked out where you live, simply connect to a VPN server in a state where it is not being blacked out. As a result, you will be able to stream the game without any restrictions.

Is it illegal to unblock sports streams?

Any time that you unblock a foreign service that is not officially available where you live, it is technically a form of piracy. However, if you are actually paying for a foreign sports streaming service, then you are paying for the content – which means that you are entitled to watch it. This creates something of a grey area, but you should be safe to do so.

With that said, it is always a good idea to use a highly secure VPN anytime that you unblock geo-restricted content. This prevents your ISP from knowing that you are accessing regionally-restricted content.

So remember to stick to one of the secure VPN for sports recommended in this article.

Conclusion

Selecting a VPN for sports streaming comes down to several factors. Firstly, the VPN should be trustworthy and reliable. The VPNs in this article are all well-known, world-class providers with superb privacy policies. As a result, these VPNs can guarantee your digital privacy. That means you're secure and private enough to stream sports without being monitored.

With privacy sorted, the next most important things are server locations and quality. All the sports VPNs we've selected have fast servers in excellent locations. The VPN you choose is really down to your personal requirements and budget – so be sure to take advantage of our chosen providers' money-back guarantees!

All the VPNs listed here provide the very best levels of service. Connection speeds are a bit better with the top providers, so opt for those if you want the very best speeds. However, all of our recommendations are perfectly good for streaming in HD; because they are actually all very fast.

I am new to VPN’s. I am no techie. Youtubetv removed Fox Sports Midwest from me as I don’t live closer to St Louis. I live 260 miles away, not 110 miles I have heard still receive it. Is there a server a vpn could trick Youtubetv into receiving it. I don’t want to switch to hululive and mlbtv blocks me. Thanks James Moyers

Hi James. In theory, you just need to find a VPN service that runs a VPN server in St Louis. I know, for example, that Surfshark does. I'm afraid I have no idea how strict YouTubeTV is at blocking known VPN services, but you can always ask for your money back if things don't work out.

A VPN can help you to watch sports competitions by allowing you to unblock local free TV channels around the globe. At various times of the year you can stream sports on UK TV stations (Wimbledon Tennis, Rugby, Football, Snooker), same on Australian channels, US channels, Spanish channels, etc. Alternatively a VPN can be used to access legitimate sports services around the globe which may often be cheaper than your local service for certain sports. Of course, due to coronavirus sports competitions have largely been cancelled - so a VPN will not be able to help much for the time being.

I just tried to sign up with ExpressVPN with their 6.67 per month special offer. However, they billed me 99.95 USD for a one year subscription. Their customer service just said it's 99.95 for a yearly subscription. They cannot explain how the 6.67 per month applies.

Hi Mario, As explained on its Pricing page, $6.67 is a special deal which gives you a 15-month subscription for the price of a 12-month subscription. $99.95/ 15 = $6.67 per month. ExpressVPN offers a 30-day no-quibble money back guarantee, so if you are not happy with this I'm sure it will happy to offer your money back.
