Best VPNs for eBay: Considerations

Fake WiFi Hotspots

You've probably walked into a café or a bus station and reached for your phone to detect available WiFi networks. It's annoying when you choose one, only to be asked for payment. What you really want is a free WiFi service, and the establishment that you're in should provide one.

When you scan through the available connections on your phone, tablet, or laptop, you'll need to search for one that has a name similar to the place you're in. If you are in the Chillout Café, you would look for a WiFi network called something like "Chillout Café WiFi." Usually, these WiFi services require a passkey. You might not want to wait to catch the eye of the waiting staff to ask for the password, particular if you see another WiFi connection in the list that sounds like a better bet. It will probably be called something like "Chillout Café Free WiFi."

Unfortunately, you have no idea who is running that WiFi hotspot. Most of the time, it will probably be the establishment that you're in. However, sometimes, the person providing the hotspot has no association with the venue. In fact, that WiFi provider could just be another customer of the place, sitting at a nearby table.

Data Capture

Any laptop or mobile device with WiFi capabilities can be turned into a hotspot. That new hotspot has to rely on internet access services from somewhere else. In the example of the Chillout Café, the fraudster would connect to the establishment's free WiFi service, then create his own WiFi hotspot, called Chillout Café Free WiFi. When you connect to that fake connection, you still get onto the internet because you get passed on to the bona fide connection through the fraudster's device.

All WiFi connections are encrypted for safety. As such, you might think that the fraudster's activities are all for nothing. However, the fraudster controls your connection's first hop from your computer to the fake hotspot. The connection establishment procedures include the negotiation of encryption keys. As the hotspot generates that key, the fraudster can decrypt, store, and read all of your communications.

The examination of connection data is carried out by computer programs and happens very quickly. Your eBay data, including your login information, email address, PayPal account, and any financial information you enter can all be captured. That traffic immediately goes out onto the genuine WiFi connection and out onto the internet. All returning traffic is similarly routed from the real hotspot, through the fake hotspot, and on to you.

WiFi Hotspot Protection

The fraudster can unravel the network encryption that is supposed to protect your WiFi traffic from snoopers. You need to make the exposed message impossible for anyone to read. When you use a VPN, all of your communications are encrypted by a key that is shared between the remote VPN server and the VPN client software on your computer. These keys are distributed using a public key encryption system. These encryption systems operate with different keys to encrypt and decrypt messages. The process also uses a system of certificates, so that each endpoint can verify the identity of the other. This key distribution system locks out any interlopers.

The fake WiFi scam is a type of hack called a "man in the middle attack." When the VPN is operating on your computer, it can communicate with its home server securely, even if the fraudster's computer examines all of the data that passes between the two VPN elements. When the fake WiFi hotspot inspection software decrypts your messages with the key for the network protection, it encounters another layer of encryption beneath, which is impossible to crack.

You don't have to worry about man in the middle attacks when you use a VPN - all of your eBay data will be protected.

Never heard of Express VPN, but I am hoping it works as I got a stealth account from Auction Essistance and I don't want to get suspended because of my old IP. May need to give Express VPN a try. Cheaper than other VPNs that were recommended.
