How To Get A Vietnam IP Address With a VPN

If you need a Vietnam IP address, a VPN is the simplest solution.

A VPN (Virtual Private Network) gives you access to a network of secure servers located all over the world. The best VPNs include servers in Vietnam that offer fast connections and unrestricted access to content in the country – including everything from Netflix Vietnam and FPT Play to your Vietnamese bank account.

VPNs also hide your location, data, identity, and browsing activity through multiple layers of encryption and security protocols. So you can access the internet in Vietnam or anywhere with complete privacy and anonymity.

We’ve tested hundreds of VPNs and found the five best for Vietnam:

  1. ExpressVPN - The best VPN for a Vietnam IP address. It’s the fastest, most secure VPN on the market, works with every streaming site, and keeps you 100% hidden.
  2. TIP

In our testing we checked that all ExpressVPN plans work for Netflix. The one year plan is the best value: three months free and a 30 day risk-free trial.

  3. NordVPN - The best budget VPN. You get airtight security, fast connections anywhere in the world, easy-to-use apps, and unrestricted access to the internet.
  4. Surfshark - Unlimited device connections are just one highlight. It also offers military-grade encryption, industry-leading privacy tools, and much more.
  5. Private Internet Access - Built for P2P, but it works for everyone. It's the most transparent and customizable VPN on this list, perfect for advanced users.
  6. PrivateVPN - A budget-friendly VPN that offers excellent security, privacy, speed, and performance. And it works with popular Vietnamese streaming sites.

Every VPN included in this list has servers in Vietnam. However, that’s not the only reason we chose them. We also looked for VPNs with the following:

  • Global networks of secure servers
  • Fast, reliable connections anywhere in the world
  • State-of-the-art security and privacy tools
  • Compatibility with Netflix, Hulu, Amazon Prime Video, and other popular streaming sites
  • Easy-to-use apps for every major device
  • Simple, affordable subscriptions

ExpressVPN offers unbeatable speeds, thanks to optimized servers in over 90 countries and a unique VPN protocol – Lightway. So you get buffer-free HD streaming, speedy downloads, and seamless internet browsing. We tested its Vietnam IP addresses and were able to binge half a season of Strong Woman Do Bong Soon without interruption. We also accessed FPT Play, Amazon Prime Video, Zing TV, and many more.

Speed isn’t the only reason we love ExpressVPN – it's also the most secure VPN on the market. Your location, data, identity, and online activity are all hidden behind unbreakable 256-bit AES encryption (the same standard used by banks, government, and militaries), DNS and IPv6 leak protection, an automatic kill-switch, and much more. We tested each feature, and they never failed for even a second.

NordVPN uses military-grade encryption, leak protections, automatic kill-switches, and various VPN protocols to keep you hidden online. Its Vietnam servers are airtight, and at no point in our tests was our true location revealed (we were very far away).

It also follows a strict no-logs policy, so your data is never recorded and can’t be shared with any government or company. Furthermore, NordVPN includes additional built-in privacy tools missing from most VPNs: an ad blocker, anti-tracking tools, and a dark web monitor in case your data is being shared or sold online. As a result, the internet is more private, safer, and enjoyable to use.

We really like how easy it is to use NordVPN. Setup only takes a couple of minutes, and the map interface is handy for quickly finding servers in various countries. Once we connected to a server in Vietnam, we didn’t need to do anything else to access and use websites in the country.

BEST BUDGET VPN: NordVPN offers incredible value and performance. It’s fast enough to watch all your favorite Vietnamese shows in HD, and offers a 30-day money-back guarantee.

You can install Surfshark on every major device: Android, iOS, Mac, Windows, game consoles, smart TVs, and more. The VPN apps are simple, easy to navigate, and the same across every device. We downloaded and installed Surfshark on a dozen devices in only a few minutes. Immediately, we connected to servers in Vietnam, and had Crash Course in Romance streaming on every one!

Speaking of streaming, Surfshark’s servers are fast enough to stream Vietnamese and international content in HD with zero buffering. It works with every major streaming site, including Netflix, Amazon Prime Video, and AppleTV – and not just in Vietnam. We tested it on the US versions, and it worked perfectly (along with Hulu, Disney+, and many more).

Surfshark also offers impressive security and privacy tools. Alongside industry standards like 256-bit encryption and a no-logs policy, your location and data are further protected by a host of specialized, customizable tools that automatically change your IP address at random, hide the fact you’re using a VPN, block ad tracking, and much more.

UNLIMITED DEVICE PROTECTION: Surfshark is secure, private, fast, and comes packed with useful privacy tools. It works well in Vietnam, and offers a hassle-free 30-day money-back guarantee.

While many VPNs don’t support P2P, PIA has tailored its VPN for file sharing and large downloads. Its security is airtight, so no one will ever know what you’re doing while it's turned on (not even your internet provider). It also has over 20,000 servers worldwide that deliver fast, reliable connections – including in Vietnam. So if you plan on doing lots of downloading, PIA might be the right choice.

PIA feels like a VPN with a mission. It's completely open source, so anyone can view its code and make sure there’s nothing dodgy or dangerous going on. This is really rare. It also conducts regular independent audits and releases the results publicly.

We’re also seriously impressed by the level of control PIA gives you. It's the most customizable VPN on this list. You can change your encryption, VPN protocols, app configuration, and much more. So if you want a faster VPN with lower encryption for streaming or a more secure but slower VPN for banking, switching takes a few seconds.

P2P-FRIENDLY: Private Internet Access (PIA) is lightweight, fast, and offers incredible levels of customization. It provides total anonymity online, and comes with a 30-day money-back guarantee.

We tested PrivateVPN’s Vietnam server location on a host of websites. Despite being quite far away, we could stream in HD on Netflix, FPT Play, Amazon Prime Video, and more. The top VPNs on this list were much faster. However, PrivateVPN delivered steady enough connections that buffering wasn’t an issue.

PrivateVPN’s security also passed every test. Its 256-bit AES encryption, automatic kill-switch, DNS/IPv6 leak protection, and other features worked consistently – keeping our location, data, and browsing activity hidden throughout our tests. While it doesn’t have the same level of customization or additional tools as other VPNs, the default settings will be enough for most people just looking for an IP address in Vietnam to access content or banking.

PrivateVPN’s plans offer excellent value. You can download its apps on up to 10 simultaneous devices, and its plans are amongst the most affordable on this list. It’s easy to set up, and navigating between servers in different countries is simple.

BEGINNER-FRIENDLY VPN: PrivateVPN is small but powerful, and works well with Vietnamese streaming sites (including Netflix Vietnam). Every plan includes a 30-day money-back guarantee.

How to choose the best VPN for a Vietnam IP address

When looking for the perfect VPN, you need to consider more than just whether or not it has IP addresses in Vietnam. Consider the following criteria before signing up to any VPN:

  • Global server network: We only recommend VPNs with servers in countries across the world. This guarantees you fast connections and access to the entire global internet.
  • Military-grade security: The best VPNs utilize 256-bit AES encryption, automatic kill-switches, and DNS/IPv6 leak protections to keep you hidden online.
  • Built-in privacy tools: They also offer additional layers of privacy via ad blockers, anti-tracking tools, and other innovative tools to hide your location and identity.
  • Fast, reliable connections: This list only includes VPNs that have minimal impact on your internet connection. You’ll be able to stream in HD buffer-free, and much more.
  • Unlimited bandwidth: No VPN we recommend restricts the amount of data you can use with it turned on.
  • Easy-to-use apps: While VPNs are incredibly complex software, they should be simple to set up and configure. Anything too complicated didn’t make this list.
  • Good value: We’ve only included VPNs with simple, affordable plans, generous hassle-free money-back guarantees, and responsive, human customer service.

This list is just a sample of the criteria we take into consideration when testing and reviewing every VPN. To learn more, you can read our complete review process.

Vietnam IP address FAQs

Are VPNs illegal in Vietnam?

No, VPNs are not illegal in Vietnam. There are no laws against VPN use in the country, and you don’t have to worry about being prosecuted for using one.

However, Vietnam has strict laws around online activity and imposes significant censorship. For example, in 2019, the Vietnamese government introduced a law restricting "online dissent” to curtail any opposition. The law also mandated that the government could demand internet service providers hand over their users’ data at any time.

If you break these laws or engage in any activity deemed criminal or illegal while using a VPN in Vietnam, you’ll still be liable for prosecution. While the best VPNs for Vietnam will hide your online activity and protect your data, you should still be aware of the risks involved at all times.

Is WhatsApp allowed in Vietnam?

Yes, WhatsApp is allowed in Vietnam. You can download it in the country from the App Store or Google Play without difficulty.

While WhatsApp encrypts your messages to keep them private, we still recommend using a WhatsApp-compatible VPN in Vietnam to add a few extra layers of privacy.

Does ExpressVPN work in Vietnam?

Yes, ExpressVPN works in Vietnam. It has plenty of fast, secure servers in the country that can access Netflix Vietnam, FPT Play, and any other content that’s usually restricted based on location. If you’re in Vietnam and need an IP address outside the country, ExpressVPN has over 3,000 servers across the globe – in 90+ countries.

Can I work remotely in Vietnam?

Vietnam is a top-rated destination for working remotely. It has fast internet, a low cost of living, and easy visa rules for most people. The country is also full of beautiful beaches, fascinating culture and history, spectacular mountain scenery, delicious cuisines, and much more.

For these reasons and many more, digital nomads and remote workers have been flocking to Vietnam for years.

Can I get a Vietnam IP address with a free VPN?

Technically, you can get a Vietnam IP address using a free VPN, but we don’t recommend it. Free VPNs are incredibly limited, and have many problems, including:

  • Tiny limits on your daily bandwidth – only enough for basic browsing (no video)
  • Connections are too slow to stream in HD
  • They only have servers in "big” countries (the US, UK, Germany, etc.)

But there are also much bigger risks to using free VPNs. Premium VPNs charge a small subscription to generate revenue. But because they don’t charge a fee, free VPNs use much shadier tactics to profit from you.

The worst tricks we’ve seen free VPNs use include:

  • Inserting ads into your browser
  • Secretly harvesting and selling your data
  • Allowing malware on their networks

Don’t take the risk of using a free VPN. Plenty of excellent cheap VPNs don’t do anything shady and offer far superior services.

Can I get a Vietnam IP address without a VPN?

There are other methods than a VPN to get a Vietnam IP address. The Tor Browser, proxy servers, and SmartDNS tools are the three most popular options.

Tor Browser

The Tor Browser is a completely anonymous browser run by volunteers all over the world. Every time you connect to the browser, your data is filtered through three random "nodes" run by a different volunteer. Each node has a unique IP address and encrypts your data independently of the other two. If you want an IP address in Vietnam, you select a "final node” located in the country.

While the Tor Browser has been popular for decades, it has a lot of limitations. It hasn’t been updated much since it launched in the 1990s. As such, its struggles with streaming, video chats, and other modern online innovations. It’s also under constant attack by various governments who want to spy on its users (it's very popular with journalists, dissidents, and activists).

There are plenty of VPNs that work with Tor. We suggest you avoid depending on the browser alone to keep your IP address and data hidden, and use one of these VPNs instead.

Proxy servers

Proxy servers are intermediary servers between you and the websites you visit. They create a "tunnel” that encrypts your data and hides your original IP address.

This is the same basic method VPNs use. However, proxy servers are much more limited. They don’t offer the same encryption standards or include features like automatic kill-switches and multi-layered protocols.

So, if you really want to keep your IP address and appear like you’re in Vietnam, stick to a VPN.

SmartDNS tools

SmartDNS tools hide your location by changing the Domain Name System (DNS) address on your web browser. To any website you visit, you’ll appear to have a DNS in Vietnam (or anywhere else).

It's a simple, easy, and quick solution – but it's incomplete. SmartDNS tools only hide your IP address on your web browser, not standalone apps (like on your phone). They often don’t automatically encrypt your connection, so while your location is theoretically hidden, everything else (including your data and identity) is left totally exposed.

The best VPNs also incorporate SmartDNS software into their apps. So, like the Tor Browser and proxy servers, you’re much better off using an excellent VPN that includes SmartDNS rather than relying on SmartDNS alone.
