Barcelona's poor management of their own finances over the past decade or has seen them rack up so much debt that La Liga refused to let them register some of their players and they could not afford to offer star man Lionel Messi a new contract. The cost of trying to keep up with the likes of PSG and Manchester City on the European stage seems to have taken its toll. However, it would be wrong to write of Barcelona completely. The Catalan giant still has quality running through the squad in the shape of experienced heads like Gerard Pique and Sergio Busquets, whilst promising young talents like Frenkie De Jong and Ansu Fati help paint a bright picture for the club's future. Memphis Depay is now on board after an impressive domestic season and European Championships, but this is a squad that is still quite far off what Barca fans have come to expect. The departure of the world's best player – one the team has been built around now for around two decades – will surely have a negative effect, but Ronald Koeman will be hoping players will take responsibility and push on. 

Real Madrid are in major debt too, but their situation is nowhere near as severe as their title rivals Barcelona. Real Madrid – despite losing Raphael Varane to Manchester United – still have a lot of quality running through their squad. The remaining talent is high enough quality for young, talented players like Martin Odegaard – who is currently negotiating a permanent move to Arsenal – to assume they have little future in the Madrid setup. David Alaba has joined on a free transfer from Bayern Munich and will add real quality, but aside from that, Real have had a pretty quiet transfer window. Karim Benzema scored two goals in the opening fixture off the back of a successful return to the France squad for Euro 2020, and Vinicius Jr, who also bagged a goal, looks like he could be turning into one of the best young players in the world. 

Of course, a conversation about who may be crowned champions in 2024 won't be complete without the mention of Atletico Madrid, who secured the title last year under the guise of talismanic manager Diego Simeone. The capture of Luis Suarez from Barcelona proved a masterstroke, and the club is not in anywhere near as much trouble as its city and title rivals Madrid and Barcelona. They've splashed out over £30m on Udinese star Rodrigo de Paul, but apart from that, seem content with the squad that took them to victory last time out. Their fiery encounter with Celta Vigo in the opening game of the season led to one red card apiece and at least eight yellows between them, but Simeone will likely view this as a statement of intent: Atletico Madrid emerged victorious, grinding out the win the way true champions do. 

A surprise package may emerge in the shape of Villareal, fresh off the back of a Europa League win and started the beginning of last season extremely well. They will have Champions League football to play this year as a result of their Europa League victory, which tends to have a negative impact on domestic league performance, but it wouldn't be all that surprising if they really pushed the top teams this year and at the very least gave them something to worry about. 

Who are the relegation candidates?

Elche are one La Liga outfit that will be heading into this season looking for a strong start. They needed two back-to-back victories in their final two games to lift themselves out of the relegation zone, and never really looked comfortable competing with the league's bigger teams, which led to several painful defeats. They lost 16 games away from home in total, and it could be their form on the road that ultimately sends them down to Spain's second tier. Manager Fran Escriba has already publicly bemoaned his lack of signings, suggesting a squad overhaul was needed and around 10 new signings were required to stay up. 

One familiar face it's nice to see back in La Liga is Espanol, who spent the last season getting promoted to Spain's top league, a change fans of the club will hope remains permanent. Espanol are a La Liga team through and through and it was quite a shock to see them relegated. Although they have a playing squad capable of a mid-table finish in Spain's elite competition, any team coming back up after 12 months facing lower-quality sides will likely take some time to adapt to a higher level of play. A journey back down to Spain's second-tier is not off the cards. 

RCD Mallorca also got promoted last season but could be relegated again just as easily as they came up. The Balearic's premier sports team is another La Liga regular, but they've been all the way down to the third-tier, back up to La Liga, and down to the second division again in the last four years, so the stats would suggest that they're due another change this year. Spain's de facto yoyo team will be hoping to break a vicious cycle of promotion and relegation, but not many Spanish football experts are giving them a chance. 

Of course, a conversation about relegation wouldn't be complete without Rayo Vallecano, a Madrid-based club that also seems to enjoy a bit of yoyoing between Spain's professional divisions. They've only just been promoted but may actually be prime candidates to go back down purely on the basis of last season's league finish. Whilst RCD Mallorca and Espanol both looked like La Liga teams in a league they shouldn't really be in, Rayo Vallecano finished sixth and were only promoted via some lucky playoff victories. Operating on a much smaller budget than the other teams in the Spanish capital – and the rest of La Liga for that matter – there's not much hope for Madrid's plucky minnows. Their 3-0 defeat at the hands of Sevilla in the opening game could prove an omen of what's to come for Rayo.
