VyprVPN vs PureVPN – Which is Best in 2024?

It’s always tough to pick between two competing providers, especially if they appear to be evenly matched on the surface. If you’ve narrowed down your list to VyprVPN and PureVPN, we’ve prepared a head-to-head comparison which aims to find an undisputed winner.

VyprVPN and PureVPN are two of the more recognizable providers, with lots of positives and stellar reputations within the industry. However, there are various key differences worth mentioning, and there is an overall winner in this comparison.

VyprVPN vs PureVPN – Which is best?

VyprVPN and PureVPN are capable services, but if you need a quick answer, we’ve managed to pick an option that is more likely to be suited to the average user's needs. To do so, we have compared the VPNs in 11 separate categories, facing them off in direct competition.

After considering the key differences, PureVPN would be our pickas the best service overall. It’s a tough decision, but it wins thanks to blistering speeds, affordable deals, and a collection of features that tip the scales in its favor.

Pricing

Often the most important factor for users, you tend to get what you pay for with many VPN services. However, most providers offer significant savings if you sign up to a longer contract.

For example, VyprVPN has a duo of plans to choose from. The first is a monthly subscription priced at a flat $10.00, while the price is lowered to $5.00 per month if you agree to a 12-month deal.

PureVPN is cheaper in comparison, aside from the one-month plan which comes in at $10.95. It’s lowered to $3.24 for 12 months if you pay the whole amount upfront, while it has a five-year deal that works out to just $1.33 per month. If you’re not afraid of a longer commitment, it’s going to be difficult to find a cheaper VPN on the market.

Pure offers the ability to pay via credit card, PayPal, or even crypto. Vypr has no anonymous payment methods, so you’ll have to pick from either credit card or PayPal.

Given the affordable deals and the various payment options, it’s a win for PureVPN in this column. It’s far cheaper, even if five years is a long time for any subscription.

Which has better features

Most premium providers differ in terms of the features they have on offer. For example, some have speciality servers, or will be able to bypass blocks in countries like China.

No Value VyprVPN PureVPN
Simultaneous connections 10 10
Total servers 700 6500
Server locations 70 96
Split-tunneling

Simultaneous connections allow you to use the VPN with multiple devices at the same time. Each provider allows for 10, which is double the industry standard.

Servers are used to connect to locations around the world. PureVPN has a massive network, spanning 6,500+ servers in 78+ countries spread across 96+ locations. VyprVPN has a collection of 700+ servers in 70+ locations, which does seem disappointing in comparison. However,Vypr owns 100% of their servers, rather than renting them from a third-party.

Each offers a form of split tunneling, which is available with PureVPN on Windows and Android. (VyprVPN calls it Connection per App, and it’s available on macOS.) Port forwarding is available with PureVPN for a small fee ($0.99 per month), offering further separation between the duo.

Only VyprVPN offers obfuscation, giving access in regions where VPN traffic is usually blocked. Elsewhere, leak protection ensures that your data will remain safe and sound for as long as you’re connected. It’s a close call, but we’d give this round to PureVPN due to the size and strength of its network.

Routers supported

Rather than connecting to each device in your household or office individually, a VPN router will ensure that every device is protected with a single account. VPNs can be installed manually on some models, and you may even be able to buy a pre-flashed router that already has the provider installed to make things easier.

Using a VPN with a router means that you’ll be able to protect Smart TVs, laptops, phones, desktop computers, games consoles, VR headsets, and IoT devices, even if they don’t have a traditional VPN app in the first place. In any case, both providers allow for 10 device connections.

As you can see from the table, VyprVPN works with Tomato firmware, although it’s nowhere near as comprehensive as PureVPN. The latter has detailed guides for an array of router models that we’ve listed below;

  • DD-WRT Applet (Beta), DD-WRT (PPTP), DD-WRT (OpenVPN), Asus (PPTP), Asus (OpenVPN), Asus Version 3.0, Tomato (PPTP), Tomato (OpenVPN), Belkin, Linksys, TP-Link, D Link, MikroTik, Sitecom, Sabai, TRENDnet, Dovado, Draytek

What services do they unblock?

Once again, the ability to bypass restrictionson content will vary depending on the VPN you’ve chosen.

Some providers are more interested in being able to unblock websites and services than others.

PureVPN is a great pick if you’re hoping to access popular international streaming platforms. This includes the likes of BBC iPlayer, while it also offers an IP address temporarily created by the VPN to give users access to a particular event or online streaming service. This is a great perk, and far beyond much of the competition.

As you can see from the table, VyprVPN is also adept at unblocking streaming sites. Looking at the United States alone, it works with Netflix US, Amazon Prime Now, HBO Go/Now, MLB.tv, WatchESPN and ESPN+, Disney+, YouTube, Spotify, Crunchyroll, DAZN, NFL Gamepass, and Hulu. It’s an extensive collection, and that’s without accounting for regions like the UK, Canada, and Germany.

Netflix is the most popular streaming platform by a wide margin, especially if it’s the US version. As for accessing different catalogs, VyprVPN would be our pick, given its ability to access Netflix from almost any country. PureVPN is no slouch, and also provides access to 12 Netflix catalogs.

The ability to share files via P2Pis important for many users. VyprVPN and PureVPN allow for torrenting, although that doesn’t include servers in either the United States or the UK for the latter.

(However, PureVPN has faster average connection speeds, so it’s not the worst news.)

A notable extra is that PureVPN offers port forwarding for $0.99 per month, which should lead to improved speeds, while making it easier to maintain the best possible download to upload ratio. Each provider offers a kill-switch and servers in a similar number of locations.

Setup & usability

How do VyprVPN and PureVPN perform in terms of setup and general usability? As you might have guessed, it’s a strong showing from both providers, who have intuitive apps available for all popular platforms.

For example, you’ll be able to find mobile apps for each VPN on the Google Play Store or the Apple App store, and each is quick and easy to download and install. If you want to use a third-party OpenVPN client, both provide access to .ovpn files. This ensures that the service will work with Linux.

There’s not much to separate VyprVPN and PureVPN in this respect, as both providers have made their apps as beginner-friendly as possible. We have to score this round as a draw.

Mobile features

Do the providers offer any special features on Android or iOS? Is there anything missing compared to desktop versions?

VyprVPN on iOS has multiple features including Public Wi-Fi Protection, Automatic Reconnect, Server Selection, Fastest Server, and VyprDNS. The Android app adds support for a kill-switch, Chameleon (obfuscation), and automatic port selection.

As for Pure, it offers port forwarding, a kill-switch, and Secure WiFi on Android. Both lack a kill-switch with iOS, which is a notable exception given it’s one of the more useful features you’d expect to find with a VPN app.

Performance & speed

Our speed tests aim to find out which VPN is fastest overall. Connection speeds will have an impact on everything from streaming to gaming, and consistency is also important if you want to avoid lag during any online task.

(We take the average of multiple speed tests, performed three times across three separate locations.)

Of the duo, PureVPN was much faster during testing, no matter the server location we connected to. It was also boosted by its US servers, which are some of the quickest on the market. Vypr has upped its game in recent years, but it’s still not speedy enough to win this round.

If you need the fastest VPN possible, we’d opt for Pure in this head-to-head.

Security

Strong security ensures that the user is protected at all times while connected to the VPN. As well as available protocols and features, we look at their implementation. Are there any issues worth mentioning?

WebRTC leak protection

SSTP
IKEv2
OpenVPN
WireGuard

Self-hosted DNS

Both providers offer WireGuard, IPsec, and OpenVPN protocols. WireGuard tends to be the fastest and safest option, so it’s a great result for each VPN in this respect. (The protocol is a recent addition for PureVPN.)

VyprVPN differs with its Chameleon protocol, which is designed to bypass strict government censorship, and can even get around deep-packet inspection(DPI).

Unfortunately, PureVPN suffered from IPv6 leaks during testing, which is potentially a major issue. (We found no IPV4 leaks, IPv6 leaks, DNS leaks, or WebRTC leaks with Vypr.) Another flaw is that PureVPN proxies DNS requests, while Vypr self-hosts all DNS requests for improved security. The latter would be our recommendation if you want the best encryption possible.

Privacy

Privacy dictates whether or not you’ll be able to use the VPN anonymously. It’s also worth paying attention to the jurisdiction, as some regions have mandatory data retention directives that could affect VPNs. (The USA is a prime example.)

PureVPN is headquartered in the British Virgin Islands, while VyprVPN is based in Switzerland. Both are promising from a privacy perspective, with strong local data laws. PureVPN was previously based in Hong Kong, but left due to the introduction of China's National Security Law for the region.

The ability to make anonymous payments via cryptocurrencies is always welcomed, although it’s only available with PureVPN.

Logging policy

We’ve checked out the logging policy for each service. VyprVPN is a no-log provider, and promises not to "track or retain any user activity while connected to our service.” It also happens to be the first VPN to be publicly audited, setting the standard for others in the industry.

PureVPN collects minimal connection statistics and reports. They note that "none of these include identifiable data or behavior, such as web traffic details, IP addresses and DNS requests.” It was the first service to introduce ‘Always-On Audit’, meaning its infrastructure and policies can be checked by KPMG at any time without warning.

If you're hoping for a free trial, you’ll be able to try PureVPN for seven days for only 99 cents.

If you’d prefer, a solid money-back guarantee can be used as a trial of sorts. Pure offers a 31-day guarantee, while Vypr is good for 30 days. It’s a great opportunity to test it out for yourself, risk-free.

Conclusion

On the surface, each VPN offers a similar service, connecting the user to a range of locations worldwide. In practice, there’s a winner in a number of key categories. VyprVPN is a great choice for unblocking streaming platforms, and it was even the first provider to be publicly audited. However, it’s significantly slower than PureVPN, and it’s also more expensive. That’s not a great combination.

PureVPN takes the win in this particular head-to-head, but only just. Vypr will come in handy for improved security, and it’s great for accessing various versions of Netflix. However, additional features are enough to take Pure over the line in this particular comparison.

Outright winner: PureVPN
