5 Best VPNs for Germany in 2019

By using a VPN in Germany you can unblock content, torrent safely and avoid government surveillance. In this article, we list the five best VPNs for Germany and give you essential tips for using a VPN in Germany.

Why do I need a VPN in Germany?

We recommend that you use a VPN in Germany as a VPN service will give users the following benefits:

  • Bypass surveillance from governments and ISPs - Germany’s government has handed its intelligence agency, Bundesnachrichtendienst (BND), unprecedented powers to spy on citizens. German authorities have also made data retention mandatory for a period of ten weeks. VPN encryption ensures that all the internet traffic coming and going from your device is kept private so you can stop governments from being able to collect data on you. It is important to note that you should look for a no log VPN for an increased level of privacy and that a VPN will not make you anonymous, for this you will need Tor.
  • Torrent safely -  the German government takes a harsh stance on copyright piracy. With a VPN you can keep your IP address private when torrenting and ensure that you evade Germany's stringent copyright laws.
  • Stop hackers from targeting your devices - VPN encryption also stops hackers from targeting your computer, so you can use your device securely over public WiFi. This makes VPNs one of the best personal cybersecurity tools out there. We recommend that you use a VPN when connecting to both home and public WiFi, particularly due to the Krack vulnerability.
  • Unblock content - as soon as you connect to a VPN server, it conceals your real IP address and you appear to be abroad (with a foreign IP address). The result is that censored or geographically-restricted content becomes available. All the services listed below will unblock streaming services such as Zattoo as well as foreign services, so you can unblock US Netflix or watch BBC iPlayer outside the UK.

Can I get a free VPN service for Germany?

Not many free VPN services are recommended, this is because the vast majority make money from their users by selling their data. This can make getting a free VPN for Germany pretty risky, so please take great care when choosing! The good news is that there are some free VPN services on the market that can be trusted.

How to Choose a VPN for Germany

When it comes to selecting a VPN for Germany, there are several considerations:

  1. Privacy

First and foremost, the VPN must provide privacy and security. A VPN with poor privacy is like an umbrella that's full of holes: useless. We've selected the VPNs in this guide because they're reliable and trusted services that have excellent privacy policies and the very best VPN protocols for keeping your data private.

  2. Server locations

A useful VPN must also have plenty of servers located around the world. We've chosen all of the VPNs in this guide because they have large networks of servers spread around the globe. ExpressVPN, for example, has servers in 94 countries. You can spoof your location and pretend to be in any one of them.

  3. Speeds

To ensure the performance of your devices doesn't suffer, you will need a high speed VPN. The vast majority of VPNs on the market (there are over 850) provide sluggish speeds. Our recommendations all have networks of lightning fast servers located all over the world. This means you can do anything you wish online using your VPN.

According to the website https://www.expressvpn.com/tos the laws of BVI are applied, so it seems in contradiction with your statement that ExpressVPN is based in Hongkong. Am I correct if I think that their data retention will be according to the laws of UK?

Hi Thomas, Ray has clearly made a mistake in this article (now corrected). ExpressVPN is indeed based in the BVI. In a recent interview with ExpresVPN I asked about just this issue... "(Me) ExpressVPN is incorporated in the British Virgin Islands (BVI). I understand that the legal situation is very murky (at best!), and that the BVI regulates its own internal affairs and has no mandatory data retention laws. But it is a British overseas territory and therefore operates under the jurisdiction and sovereignty of the UK government. It seems reasonable to me, then, to assume that the UK government, which is extremely hostile to privacy and is a key member of the NSA-led Five Eyes spying alliance, can put pressure on the BVI government and businesses. What are your thoughts on this? (ExpressVPN) I would say the situation is very clear: Although BVI has the word “British” in it, the government of the BVI effectively operates with full sovereign powers and little oversight from the UK. BVI legislators are democratically elected by BVI citizens, and the judicial system is also independent from the UK. Unlike many countries which infringe on individuals’ right to privacy, the BVI is an offshore jurisdiction renowned for data protection laws. We carefully took our users’ privacy into consideration when we chose this jurisdiction. There are no data retention laws in the BVI and for us to consider a court order legally binding, it would need to come from a BVI court. The British Virgin Islands don’t have any foreign intelligence operations and therefore are also not part of the Five Eyes spying alliance. We also are aware of zero incidents of the UK government directly pressuring BVI companies to cough up data on their customers, as they simply lack jurisdiction for making such requests. A BVI company can produce records or evidence about its customers only if ordered to do so by the BVI High Court. And fortunately, because we don’t log or monitor traffic data on our VPN servers, we don’t possess information that would be useful for us to produce were such an order to be made."

Hi jack, Any half-way decent VPN should work just fine in Germany, but in our view Astrill is not a good enough service to make this list.
