Can I use a free VPN for Germany?

If you go to any app store, you will find lots of "free VPN" services. However, although they don't cost you money, they may cost you your privacy and security.

A lot of free VPNs harvest user data in order to sell it on to advertisers, which target you with annoying ads. In addition to this, there are several studies that have revealed that these VPNs lie about the level of encryption they use, some provide no protection at all. Worst of all, some free services even contain malware.

Luckily there are VPNs out there that offer users strong privacy and security features, without charging a thing. Check out our best free VPN page for a list of free services. It is important to know that these free plans are used to advertise a paid version of the provider's product. As a result, they have the following limitations:

  • Data caps - Some free services cap the amount of data that you can download via the VPN, so you aren't able to use them for data-intensive tasks like streaming.
  • A limited number of servers - As the providers of the free service also offer a free plan, they do not give you access to their whole server network. Most don't have German IP addresses, which may be a problem.
  • Bandwidth restrictions - This will slow your internet connection down and often makes these services unsuitable for streaming.

Although these VPNs have various restrictions, they will still provide encryption and improve your online privacy. Nevertheless, if you plan on using a VPN to unblock streaming sites, for torrenting, or other data-intensive tasks, then they may not be suitable for you. In this case, we recommend that you take advantage of VPN free trials and money-back guarantees. All the services listed in this article have them.

Alternatively, there are many low-cost VPN services out there. For more information about these and for a list of recommendations, check out our cheap VPN page.

Why use a VPN in Germany?

If you have never used a VPN before, you may be wondering if you actually need one. Below, we've detailed the advantages of using a VPN for Germany.

Prevent unnecessary surveillance

Germany is part of the 14 Eyes surveillance agreement, which means it shares intelligence data with invasive governments such as the UK, the USA, Australia, France, the Netherlands, and Norway.

Germany is an affluent country that has invested heavily in its domestic and international intelligence capabilities. This creates a reasonable concern about the kinds of mass surveillance it is engaging in. In addition, Germany passed a data retention act in 2016 that requires ISPs to store metadata such as IP addresses, port numbers, and the date and time that the Internet is accessed - for a total of ten weeks.

For the average law-abiding citizen who hasn't done anything wrong, this potential intrusion into the public's online habits is objectionable. Fortunately, a VPN prevents this from occurring.

Bypass censorship and ISP blocks

Germany is a country that does not enforce high levels of censorship. Despite this, ISPs are required to block access to some online content that may be of value to researchers, journalists, and writers. A VPN can easily allow you to gain access to that content - however negligible it may be.

Bypass blocks in schools or workplaces

All over the world, schools, colleges, universities, and workplaces block access to some internet content. Local network administrators block access to services like Netflix, YouTube, Instagram, and games like Fortnite and Minecraft. This is done to keep students or employees productive and to stop them getting distracted.

Prevent surveillance capitalism

These days, businesses spend a lot of time harvesting consumer data in order to create analysis, statistics, and even revenue by selling that data on. Every time you connect to a public WiFi hotspot, the owner of the hotspot can detect the websites you visit and can store that data about you.

If you connect to a WiFi hotspot in a hotel, the WiFi provider also has your name and payment information, allowing it to put a list of the websites you visit, the purchases you make, and the services you use in a database.

Even when you use the internet at home, the websites and services you visit track the IP address given to you by your ISP. This can be used to monitor you when you return to the site and to figure out where you are. With a VPN, you prevent this IP tracking and ensure that you are gaining added privacy as you visit those websites.

Bypass geo-restrictions

Besides concealing your IP address from online services for privacy purposes, a VPN also allows you to trick the websites you are visiting into thinking you are in a different physical location. Many websites and services restrict their content so that it can only be accessed in certain geographic regions. These are called geo-restrictions. Most of the time, online services do this to comply with licensing agreements they have in place.

A VPN allows you to bypass these international restrictions completely, opening up access to any website content or service from around the globe.

Conclusion

Though Germany is an affluent country without soaring levels of censorship, a VPN is still a vital privacy tool. If you want to keep your traffic history private, access geo-restricted sites or spoof your location, then a VPN is the perfect tool for the job. I think you must have added the Dedicated IPs that are specific to the region. Like I use Purevpn's German Dedicated IP and it works perfect than the ones with dynamic IPs when you are talking about the Region specific vpns. So in that case Dedicated IPs are perfect. Well its a good read for the newbies who seek a good vpn.

According to the website https://www.expressvpn.com/tos the laws of BVI are applied, so it seems in contradiction with your statement that ExpressVPN is based in Hongkong. Am I correct if I think that their data retention will be according to the laws of UK?

Hi Thomas, Ray has clearly made a mistake in this article (now corrected). ExpressVPN is indeed based in the BVI. In a recent interview with ExpresVPN I asked about just this issue... "(Me) ExpressVPN is incorporated in the British Virgin Islands (BVI). I understand that the legal situation is very murky (at best!), and that the BVI regulates its own internal affairs and has no mandatory data retention laws. But it is a British overseas territory and therefore operates under the jurisdiction and sovereignty of the UK government. It seems reasonable to me, then, to assume that the UK government, which is extremely hostile to privacy and is a key member of the NSA-led Five Eyes spying alliance, can put pressure on the BVI government and businesses. What are your thoughts on this? (ExpressVPN) I would say the situation is very clear: Although BVI has the word “British” in it, the government of the BVI effectively operates with full sovereign powers and little oversight from the UK. BVI legislators are democratically elected by BVI citizens, and the judicial system is also independent from the UK. Unlike many countries which infringe on individuals’ right to privacy, the BVI is an offshore jurisdiction renowned for data protection laws. We carefully took our users’ privacy into consideration when we chose this jurisdiction. There are no data retention laws in the BVI and for us to consider a court order legally binding, it would need to come from a BVI court. The British Virgin Islands don’t have any foreign intelligence operations and therefore are also not part of the Five Eyes spying alliance. We also are aware of zero incidents of the UK government directly pressuring BVI companies to cough up data on their customers, as they simply lack jurisdiction for making such requests. A BVI company can produce records or evidence about its customers only if ordered to do so by the BVI High Court. And fortunately, because we don’t log or monitor traffic data on our VPN servers, we don’t possess information that would be useful for us to produce were such an order to be made."

Hi jack, Any half-way decent VPN should work just fine in Germany, but in our view Astrill is not a good enough service to make this list.
