If you want to start watching more content on your Android TV or Android TV box, a VPN is the ideal solution.

If you have a newer Android TV or box, you should be able to download the Android TV VPN app directly from the app store (just like any other app). To get it set u and running just follow these simple steps:

  1. If you don't already have a subscription to an Android TV VPN, then pick one from the list above. Navigate to the services website and subscribe. You will need to set up a username and password and make a payment. Remember to hold onto your password and username as you will need these to login to the VPN on your Android TV.
  2. On your Android TV, access the Google Play Store and search for the VPN you have a subscription with. Download the app and let it install.
  3. Launch the VPN app and log in to the VPN using your credentials.
  4. Select a VPN server in the location that you prefer. You can opt for whichever country that you want to watch content from.

As soon as the VPN connects, your data will be protected with encryption giving you digital privacy. Your real IP address will also be concealed and you will appear to be in the location that you selected. As a result, you can watch any geo-restricted content from that region.

Set up a VPN for Android TV box

If your Android TV does not allow you to download apps from the Google Playstore, you may need to install the APK file manually. You can do this by sideloading the app onto your device:

  1. Start by downloading the APK file onto a PC or Android device
  2. Next,  copy the file onto a USB dongle and copy it over to your Android TV box via the USB port.
  3. go in your settings and select allow apps from Unknown Sources.
  4. Once the APK is on your device you can run it and install it.

If your device does not have a USB hub, you could send the APK file to yourself in an email, open that email on your Android TV and download it to the device.

PrivateVPN is a service from Sweden has been taking the world by storm in the last couple of years; quickly earning a reputation with its subscribers as a brilliant service for streaming.

PrivateVPN is one of the few services that consistently unblocks services like Netflix US and BBC iPlayer, and its commitment to unblocking content has even seen it providing features that other VPNs tend to charge a surcharge for.

PrivateVPN is not the fastest VPN in the world, however, it is fast enough to stream content on an Android TV, and the VPN provides staggeringly good value for money. In addition, the VPN is strong on privacy too. Servers in over 50 countries and growing all the time.

3. ExpressVPN

ExpressVPN is a well-known VPN is based in the British Virgin Islands, and it is a service that is widely recognized as being one of the best VPNs in the world. A no-logs privacy policy and strong military-grade encryption mean that this VPN will keep your unblocking habits completely private. In addition, ExpressVPN has servers in a whopping 94 countries; which means that you will be able to unblock huge amounts of content worldwide.

ExpressVPN is very easy to use, and it has 24/7 live chat that is always prepared to answer your questions. As a result, this VPN is always available to help with unblocking on an Android TV. This VPN is in third-position because it is a tad expensive. However, if money is no object and you want something fast that is considered above par, this is a service well worth considering.

4. IPVanish

  • Pricing

    From $5.20 / month
  • Available on

    • Windows
    • MacOS
    • Android
    • iOS

IPVanish is a US-based provider is a service that can provide excellent speeds for streaming. This is because it runs on a proprietary network of servers. The VPN has a zero-logs policy, and it provides strong encryption which means that privacy is assured.

Servers are located in over 60 countries, which means you will always be able to unblock any content you desire. However, IPVanish does not unblock Netflix US, so if this is a concern we recommend opting for a VPN higher in this list.

We like this VPN for its ease of use, however, it definitely isn’t quite as good for streaming as some of the others in this guide. For this reason, we advise giving it a proper test run to ensure it unblocks what you need - before settling on it as your service.

5. PureVPN

  • Pricing

    From $2.88 / month
  • Available on

    • Windows
    • MacOS
    • Android
    • Linux
    • iOS
  • Features

    • Netflix
    • iPlayer

PureVPN is often the service of choice for people who want to unblock a lot of content at a dirt-cheap price. The VPN is secure and it will get the job done across all devices including on Android TVs.

We enjoy the fact that this VPN has outstanding customer support, and it is one of the few VPNs that will lay on dedicated IPs for specific events (such as Wimbledon, for example) to ensure that any user having trouble can definitely access the stream they want. This alone makes the service extremely interesting.

Well worth testing if you are on a tight budget but want something that is praised for unblocking streams. Not so good for privacy; so if you want a VPN for multiple purposes stick to one higher in this list.

What can I watch with an Android TV VPN?

A VPN will let you pretend to be in a different country to access content usually only available there. As a result, you can access foreign services such as:

Installing Kodi and a VPN on an Android TV in another way to access vast amounts of content that is usually geo-restricted.

Can I get a free VPN for Android TV box?

Although there are some reputable free services on the market, the reality is that you will not have much success streaming with a free VPN for Android TV.

Free services tend to have download limits and connection speed restrictions designed to make people upgrade onto the paid service. Thus, the free subscription is only really there to give people a taste of what the full version can do.

For streaming content in HD on a TV you will want no data caps and the fastest speeds available, which means that you will need to invest in a full VPN service.

However, all the VPN services we have recommended in this article provide a money-back guarantee. As a result, you can test them all out for free to see which you prefer; without risking your hard-earned cash.

Can I get a VPN for Sony Android TV?

Yes, as long as you can access the Playstore on your Sony Android TV (or it has a USB slot);   you will be able to install a VPN app on your Sony TV.

However, if you have an older model you may want to check what kind of internal storage space the TV has - because you will need a little room to install the software.

Conclusion

With an Android TV VPN setup, you can instantly gain privacy and start unblocking content from all over the world. Android TVs have the distinct advantage of letting you download Android VPN apps directly to the device, which means that you don’t need to mess about with sharing your TV’s connection with a computer to make use of the VPN’s capabilities.

Admittedly, if you have an older Android TV you may not have access to the Playstore. If this is the case you will need to download the APK file from the Google Playstore on a separate device - and sideload it using a dongle. However, this is easy and we have included instructions for doing so in this article.

With a VPN installed, you will be able to start watching country-specific services and apps. As a result, you will be able to access more services, apps, TV shows, movies, and sports competitions than ever before.

We think using a VPN with Android TV is a no brainer, but if you aren’t convinced we recommend you have a go by using one of our recommended VPN’s money-back guarantees. You really have nothing to lose.

Hi Sarah. You should be able to use OpenVPN for Android (https://proprivacy.com/guides/openvpn-for-android) on any Android TV. You can download the OpenVPN setup files from the ExpressVPN website (My account -> Setup more devices -> Manual config).

Your article was very informative. I have a new Sony Smart TV . I downloaded the IP Vanish app and set it up for Dublin Ireland. How can you tell if it’s working. On ipad and iPhone there’s a icon appears to tell you that the vpn is active. I can’t see anything that tells me that my VPN is active on my tv. Maybe it’s me that’s stupid Regards George
