How to set up a Vuze VPN - Windows, macOS, and Linux
Vuze torrent client can be setup to be bound to a VPN client, ensuring Vuze will never download or upload anything outside of the secure VPN tunnel. This is a great way to guarantee that you never accidentally leak P2P traffic to your ISP in an unencrypted state. It also protects you against any potential leaks should the VPN connection drop out mid-way through a download. Follow the steps below to use Vuze and a VPN together.
- Make sure that your VPN connection is active.
- In Vuze go to tools -> Options -> Mode and select ‘Advanced’ under ‘User Proficiency.’
- Then go to Connection -> Advanced Network Settings and look through the list for your VPN connection.
In Windows, this will be called; PPTP, L2TP or IKEv2 – WAN Miniport, OpenVPN – TAP-Windows-Adapter V9, My OpenVPN connection in Windows is using the eth6 interface. Make a note of the interface name.
For Mac users, the VPN interface name is always utun1.
For Linux users, it will be called tun0. - Go to the top of the list and enter the interface name in the "Bind to local IP address or interface” dialog box.
- Head down to the bottom of the list and check "Enforce IP bindings even when interfaces are not available…”
- Click Save and exit Options.
- A little routing icon at the bottom of the Vuze client should now show green to let you know everything is working correctly.
- If you disconnect from your VPN, the icon will turn red, and all torrent downloads will come to a stop.
Vuze Torrenting
The Vuze torrent client uses the BitTorrent protocol to download files that have been split up into bite-size chunks. These chunks are downloaded directly (Peer-to-Peer) from other BitTorrent users located all over the world.
Downloading this jigsaw of file chunks and then glueing them back together at the end allows torrenters to quickly download the files they want. It also allows files to constantly be shared among hundreds of users worldwide.
When you download torrent files, you also share chunks of the file with anyone else that is leaching the file. This causes those other "peers” to be able to see your IP address, which can put you at risk of hacking.
A VPN is the ideal solution because it prevents anybody from being to identify your real IP address, preventing you from being attacked.
How to Use Vuze
When you install Vuze, it is important to carefully monitor each step. Vuze is set up to install various browser add-ons and third party apps that belong to its partners by default. However, you don't actually need this extra bloatware and you can opt out of installing it (and we advise that you do).
Although it has a large number of features, Vuze is, at it's heart, just a traditional BitTorrent client and will be similar to any other torrent client you have used before. If you have never downloaded using the BitTorrent protocol, here is a quick guide:
- Download and install Vuze.
- Ensure you have a VPN running (this is optional but strongly recommended).
- Visit a BitTorrent website. These websites host links to torrent files and magnet links. You can browse for content that interests you, or search for something specific. Many websites include user-reviews of torrents, which can help you pick good ones.
- When you have found the content you want, simply click on its torrent link or magnet link. The torrent will open in your BitTorrent client and begin downloading.
- When the download is 100% completed, enjoy!
Unlike the desktop client, the excellent Android app is lightweight and ad-free. A pro version is now available via in-app purchase (about $4), but I have been unable to determine what features this adds (and am too skinflint to shell out the money to find out!).
The mobile version of Vuze works in exactly the same way as the desktop versions.
Other common questions about Vuze and VPNs
Although Vuze is not the only BitTorrent client that can be set up to link directly to a VPN client (qBitTorrent does this too), this feature does make Vuze one of the best BitTorrent clients available. Considering the risks associated with torrenting without a VPN, anybody who torrents regularly is strongly advised to consider this client.
