How to Get a Mexico IP Address Using a VPN

If you need an IP address in Mexico, a VPN is the quickest, easiest solution. A VPN (Virtual Private Network) connects you to a network of secure, speed-optimized servers located in countries across the globe.

But not every VPN has servers in Mexico, and many aren’t powerful enough to access content and websites in the country, whether it's Netflix or Claro Video. You need a VPN that will go undetected by streamers, online banking, and similar websites, while delivering fast, reliable connections and keeping your data hidden.

We’ve tested hundreds of VPNs and found the five best for Mexico (and everywhere else).

Best VPNs for getting a Mexican IP address:

  1. ExpressVPN - The best VPN for Mexico. Unbeatable speed, security, and access to Mexican and international streaming sites. Comes with a risk-free 30-day money-back guarantee.
  2. TIP

In our testing we checked that all ExpressVPN plans work for Netflix. The one year plan is the best value: three months free and a 30 day risk-free trial.

  3. NordVPN - The best budget VPN. Low-cost subscriptions backed up by industry-leading security, reliable connections, easy-to-use apps, and much more.
  4. Surfshark - Unlimited device connections, robust privacy tools, uninterrupted streaming, and simple apps for almost every device.
  5. Private Internet Access - A P2P and torrenting VPN that also works for streaming, banking, gaming, and much more – in Mexico and everywhere else.
  6. PrivateVPN - PrivateVPN - Small but reliable VPN that’s excellent for streaming, easy to use, and super affordable.

Every VPN listed above does much more than just give you a Mexico IP address. Each one also offers:

  • High-speed servers across the globe
  • State-of-the-art security features
  • Access to popular streaming sites
  • Unlimited bandwidth and no usage caps
  • Simultaneous connections to multiple devices
  • Easy-to-use apps
  • Good value
  • Responsive customer support

How to get a Mexico IP address with a VPN in four steps

To get a Mexican IP address, simply follow these four steps:

  1. Pick a VPN with servers in Mexico. We recommend ExpressVPN.
  2. Download the VPN app onto your device(s).
  3. Open the VPN app and follow the basic setup instructions.

You may need to clear your browser’s cache and cookies to ensure your original IP address is wiped from any websites you’ve visited.

ExpressVPN’s Mexico servers are incredibly fast. We connected from a “secret” location very far away (our office), and there was almost no difference in our internet speed. We streamed countless shows on Netflix, HBO MAX, Disney+, and other popular sites – all in HD, and with zero buffering. Downloads only took a few minutes, and even gaming was completely lag-free. Whatever you need a Mexico IP address for, ExpressVPN delivers one that’s lightning-fast.

We were also seriously impressed by ExpressVPN’s security. It uses a patented, lightweight protocol called Lightway to keep your location, data, and activity hidden. Lightway is backed up by 256-bit AES encryption, DNS and IPv6 leak protection, automatic kill-switches (which disable your internet connection if the VPN is disrupted), and much more. ExpressVPN also uses RAM-only servers and follows a strict no-logs policy – so your data is never stored anywhere.

ExpressVPN has apps for almost every device: iOS, Android, Windows, Mac, smart TVs, game consoles, and much more. Installation and setup take less than five minutes, and 24/7 live support is available in case you have any issues.

NordVPN offers industry-leading privacy, with a suite of built-in tools missing from many top VPNs. Aside from military-grade security and encryption, you also get ad blockers, anti-tracking tools, malware protection, dark web monitoring (in case your data is being sold on the dark web), and much more. By turning each of these on, you’ll enjoy an overall safer, less distracting internet experience.

We tested NordVPN’s 30+ Mexico servers for more than just their privacy features. They also gave us complete access to every streaming and banking website, from Netflix Mexico and Televisa to BBVA Bancomer and Santander México.

While connecting to some servers took longer than we expected, once the connection was made, NordVPN delivered super-fast streaming and browsing. You can live stream the latest Liga MX games from anywhere or catch up with classic episodes of La Reina del Sur and never worry about buffering or broken connections.

BEST BUDGET VPN: NordVPN’s low-cost plans don’t mean you’re sacrificing performance or speed. It delivers airtight security, best-in-class privacy tools, and fast, reliable connections. 30-day money-back guarantee included.

Surfshark’s apps are easy to use, with initial setup only taking a few minutes. Once you’ve installed it on your devices, you can quickly navigate between servers in Mexico and around the world. You can also configure its settings and tools for maximum privacy and security, without impacting your connection speed.

We like how many features Surfshark packs into its apps. You get all the industry-standard security tools and a host of extras, including ad blockers, anti-tracking tools, obfuscated servers, built-in leak tests, and an IP rotator tool that regularly changes your IP address without disrupting your connection. Combined, these tools add multiple layers of privacy and protection while you’re online.

Surfshark is also fast enough for streaming in Mexico (and beyond). We tested it on Netflix, Claro Sports, and many other popular platforms. It delivered buffer-free HD streaming without any headaches. We also connected to servers in Asia, Australia, and Africa. Each time, we enjoyed uninterrupted access to local content from various countries.

UNLIMITED DEVICES: Surfshark has plenty of powerful tools to hide your location, data, and identity online. It's fast, reliable, affordable, and offers a 30-day money-back guarantee.

Private Internet Access (PIA) is the most customizable VPN on this list. It's an excellent choice for advanced users who want complete control – or beginners who just want to stream their favorite shows.

  • Pricing

    • 24 months + 2 months FREE: $2.19/mth
      82% OFF

    • P2P and torrent-friendly
    • 20,000+ global servers

    • Doesn’t work with every streaming site
    • Based in the US

PIA lets you customize almost every aspect of your VPN. You can quickly change between different protocols (OpenVPN, WireGuard, and IKEv2), levels of AES encryption (128 and 265-bit), and much more. This will suit advanced users who want to tweak their apps based on specific needs (streaming, P2P, banking, etc.) but might overwhelm new users. However, the default settings are also robust enough for most uses.

While PIA was initially built for P2P and torrenting, it also works with Mexico's most popular streaming sites. We tested it on Netflix and many others. In most cases, we accessed content without any issues, and were able to stream in HD without any buffering or stalled connections.

You might be concerned to learn that PIA is based in the US – one of the least privacy-friendly places on Earth and deep in the Five Eyes alliance. However, PIA follows a strict no-logs policy and never records any user data. This has even been proven in court – TWICE (2016 and 2018)!

BEST FOR P2P: Private Internet Access offers unrivaled customization, complete transparency, and unbreakable security. It's best for advanced users, but beginners will like it too. 30-day money-back guarantee included.

PrivateVPN is smaller than most top VPNs in Mexico. But it's fast, reliable, and works with the most popular Mexican and international streaming sites.

PrivateVPN has the smallest server network on this list – 200+ servers in over 60 countries. However, we tested its Mexico and international servers and were impressed by their speeds. You’ll be able to stream in HD without issues, access your Mexican bank account, and much more. You can also connect to the internet outside Mexico and instantly access content from anywhere in the world.

You also get industry-standard security, including military-grade encryption, numerous VPN protocols, DNS/IPv6 leak protection, automatic kill-switches, RAM-only servers, and much more. We tested each feature and found them all working perfectly. Our actual location, identities, data, and browsing activities were all hidden behind an impenetrable shield.

PrivateVPN’s plans are budget-friendly and cover up to 10 simultaneous devices. It doesn’t have as many apps as the top VPNs on this list and is missing browser extensions. But it's an ideal choice if you need a basic streaming VPN for your computer, phone, or tablet.

SMALL BUT POWERFUL: PrivateVPN offers fast, reliable connections, access to your favorite streamers, and airtight security. Every plan includes a 30-day money-back guarantee.

How to choose the best VPN for a Mexico IP address

Servers with Mexican IP addresses aren’t the only feature to factor in when picking a VPN. You need a powerful, trustworthy, and secure VPN that’s versatile enough for every kind of use – from buffer-free HD Netflix binges to secure, fast online banking.

Here are the top criteria we use when recommending VPNs:

  • Global server network: The best VPNs have thousands of servers located in countries all over the world. Even tiny, remote countries like Bhutan and Bolivia.
  • Fast enough for HD streaming: If you want to access Mexican streaming, you also need a fast enough connection to actually watch your favorite shows, movies, and sports.
  • Unlimited bandwidth: Don’t waste time on VPNs that unnecessarily cap your data. The best VPNs don’t enforce any usage limits.
  • Airtight security: We only recommend VPNs that offer state-of-the-art, military-grade security, including 256-bit AES encryption, automatic kill-switches, RAM-only servers, and much more.
  • Transparent privacy policies and tools: Our top VPNs are regularly audited by independent firms to confirm they're fulfilling their marketing promises and policies.
  • Easy-to-use apps: VPNs are incredibly complex, but their apps don’t have to be. This list only includes VPNs that even the least tech-savvy people can use.
  • Good value: Look for VPNs with simple, affordable subscriptions and generous money-back guarantees (at least 30 days).

IP address in Mexico FAQs

Do I need a VPN for Mexico?

You need a VPN in Mexico if you’re worried about online surveillance, censorship, cybersecurity, and overall privacy.

While the Mexican government doesn’t engage in heavy censorship or surveillance of its citizens, it's not perfect. Like all governments, it invests heavily in monitoring online activity in the country. For example, in 2016, the Mexican government signed a contract with NSO Group – the now notorious producer of Pegasus spyware.

Using a VPN in Mexico will shield you from a lot of potential surveillance by the government by encrypting your data and hiding your online activity. Other benefits include:

  • Less exposure to threats like malware, DDOS attacks, and phishing
  • Less intrusive ad targeting and data harvesting by websites and apps
  • Access websites, apps, and content anywhere in the world

Can I get a Mexico IP address without a VPN?

A few options exist for accessing IP addresses in Mexico without a VPN. But the only ones we recommend (for security reasons) are the Tor browser, SmartDNS tools, and proxy servers.

However, while each one offers a different way to get a Mexico IP address, they’re nowhere near as secure and easy to use as the best VPNs in Mexico.

Tor Browser

The Tor browser is a volunteer-managed, decentralized, anonymous web browser. When using the Tor browser, your internet connection is "tunneled” through three random "nodes” run by volunteers across the globe. If you want a Mexico IP, you select a final node located in the country.

Tor has been a popular privacy tool for decades. However, these days it's incredibly limited. It struggles with streaming, gaming, and other recent online innovations. It’s slow, difficult to use, and under constant attack from authoritarian governments and spy agencies. Also, you’re relying on volunteers to maintain the secure network that hides your IP address.

There are some excellent VPNs that incorporate Tor. We suggest using them to ensure a private but enjoyable internet experience.

SmartDNS

SmartDNS tools change your location online by altering your web browser's Domain Name System (DNS) address. To appear in Mexico, you select a DNS address in the country.

However, most SmartDNS tools don’t automatically encrypt your data. So, while your location is hidden, your data is still totally exposed (including, potentially, your browsing activity). SmartDNS tools only affect your browser, so your original IP address will still be visible via mobile or desktop apps that connect directly to the internet.

Finally, SmartDNS tools usually don’t include leak protections, automatic kill-switches, and other tools included in the best VPNs.

If you want to use SmartDNS, pick a VPN with SmartDNS tools as part of its package.

Proxy servers

A proxy server is an intermediary server that encrypts your data through a "tunnel” before it connects to a website. If you want a Mexico IP address, you select a proxy server located in the country.

Proxy servers are very similar to one aspect of VPNs: their secure servers around the world. However, they are much less sophisticated or secure. Most proxy servers don’t encrypt your data. They don’t include essential tools like DNS/IPv6 leak protection, RAM-only server technology, modern encryption protocols, and more. They’re usually slow and ill-suited for video, P2P, and gaming.

If you need an IP address in Mexico, VPNs are more secure, faster, and easier to use than proxy servers.

Does NordVPN work in Mexico?

Yes, NordVPN has 30+ servers in Mexico. Each server has a unique IP address that allows access to content, websites, and apps only available in Mexico.

Can I get a Mexico IP address with a free VPN?

You might find a free VPN with Mexico IP addresses, but it won't be easy. Most free VPNs only host servers in big countries like the US. Countries like Mexico are seen as too small or not popular enough to invest in.

Even if you find a free VPN that works in Mexico, you’ll still face numerous challenges. Free VPNs limit your data to a few MB per day, and they’re incredibly slow. So, they’re only useful for basic web browsing (no streaming or gaming, for example).

Because free VPNs don’t charge a subscription, they need to profit from you in other ways – and their methods are often incredibly shady. We’ve seen free VPNs:

  • Secretly track and sell user data
  • Insert ads into users’ web browsers
  • Bombard users with popups for their paid packages
  • Allow malware and hackers into their networks

If you’re on a tight budget, skip the free VPNs altogether and stick with the best cheap VPNs.

What can I do with a Mexico IP address?

Once you’ve used a VPN to get a secure Mexican IP address, you have plenty of options for using the internet more securely and with much better privacy.

For example, you can:

  • Access Mexican streaming content from anywhere
  • Watch global sports events live
  • Access your Mexican bank account
  • Reduce government surveillance of your internet activity
  • Block ads and tracking
  • Stay safe from hackers and cybercriminals
