NordVPN names August 19 International VPN Day

The VPN provider hopes to celebrate VPNs for an entire month, with a special discounted subscription and free VPN skills test.

NordVPN is celebrating a free internet, and a right to digital privacy, by naming August 19 International VPN Day. The move comes as part of a larger campaign to raise awareness about VPNs and their uses. As the VPN provider claims that one day is "not enough to take it all in", International VPN Day will actually be part of a longer VPN Awareness Month dedicated to digital freedom.

During the celebration, NordVPN will be:

VPNs have become an indispensable piece of kit for anyone who frequents the web these days, safeguarding privacy and protecting against censorship and surveillance. What's more, a VPN is also an effective countermeasure against the threat of cyberattacks, malware, and invasive ads.

Plenty of people still aren't using VPNs, however, and may be completely unaware of the benefits they're missing out on. In fact, a 2021 survey conducted by DataProt reveals that only 31% of internet users have invested in a VPN.

NordVPN's decision to highlight the various use cases of the privacy-boosting tool is much more understandable, as a result, especially given the aforementioned cyberthreats.

On the subject of digital risks, NordVPN comments:

The decision to extend the VPN awareness campaign throughout the month was, apparently, an easy one to make. NordVPN claims that whilst matters of digital privacy and security may trend on their own, it's much easier to talk about prevalent issues and educate people about the topic when there's a dedicated occasion.

Internet users' online data and privacy are at risk. Whenever people go online, there's always someone watching: internet service providers, marketers, network administrators. In some countries, it's even worse - users have to deal with internet restrictions and censored content.

So, starting from tomorrow, visitors to NordVPN's special landing page will be able to check out all sorts of educational resources, a special late-summer subscription deal, and a National Privacy Test – touted to examine how much you know about VPNs and online security. NordVPN encourages some friendly rivalry, suggesting that people pit their VPN knowledge against friends, coworkers, and even family members…
